Happy birthday to #paleontologist Mary Anning (1799 –1847)! She was the wrong class, sex & religious denomination to gain the education, opportunity to work & communicate her results or garner any respect as a pioneering paleontologist. Further, during her lifetime most people thought Earth was a mere few thousand years old, based on a very literal interpretation of the Bible & found the idea of extinction did not fit in with the story of creation. 🧵1/

@minouette Great details in that linocut!

Whenever I think of Mary Anning, I think fondly of this old comic by Kate Beaton http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=399

Just published: How can art effectively deliver environmental messages?

I interviewed my colleague Dr Robyn Glade-Wright about her environmental art practice and her 2023 exhibition 'Falling from the Sky' at James Cook University Cairns, where I was an exhibiting artist(-scientist)

Last week, I spoke about the power of art / science connections for the closing event of a Masters solo exhibition 'Beauty & Blemish' - I also learnt a lot about lichen in the process (did you know lichen is a symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi?)

The exhibition forms part of Leanne Shead's Masters in Creative Arts at JCU - lichen is embedded in every artwork, exploring notions of beauty and blemish

A photograph taken inside an art gallery, with red couches in the foreground and art hanging on the wall in the background incorporating lichen and doilies, lit from above
A photograph of two artworks hanging on a wall of an art gallery. Each work is a portrait-oriented rectangle of wood with a textured surface incorporating lichen and doilies

Casper be like… where is my Christmas Eve chicken?!

(He did get a meaty breakfast and has dry food 😄 But dislikes the different schedule of the weekend!)

Same view of the balcony with the cat looking dissatisfied at the food bowl (not empty).

- this is last year's Pint of Science Australia artwork that I designed for their promo materials and merch (super proud to wear my frog drawings on a t-shirt)

I'm lucky to have friends like @michcampbell who encouraged me to submit a design for the festival!

- a selection of drawings from my Charcoal in Charcoal series. These are charcoal drawings of some of the magnified fossil charcoal particles I studied from the lake cores in my PhD, to reconstruct ancient fire histories

Some of these are 8,000 years old!

Last year, I did an Instagram story takeover for Letters to a Pre-Scientist (http://www.prescientist.org/) and I introduced some key concepts in archaeology and related geosciences - here's the two-part cartoon I drew to introduce stratigraphy!

For National Archaeology Week (Australia) each year I usually crochet something new, and this year it was a mini trowel!

It's loosely based on a full-sized trowel pattern I designed last year. My free archaeological crochet patterns are here: https://www.ravelry.com/designers/e-rehn

More botanical watercolour for !

This is a little carnivorous pitcher plant (genus Nepenthes) I saw near one of the lakes I sampled for my PhD

These tend to thrive in places where soils are low on nutrients, by supplementing their diet with insects

I’ve just spotted the black and white cat who normally sneaks onto my balcony at 3am! I set the trap for but accidentally left the scissors out which reveal that I cut the tie that holds the trap open. WILL HE CLUE IN?

Also strong possibility that Casper appears instead and walks right inside 🤦🏼‍♀️

Science talks drawn in real time!

I spent the last 2 days at a local conference on tropical environmental & sustainability science, cartooning every talk as it happened (except my own!)

It was an interesting challenge, and even more interesting was that it improved my focus and helped me stay engaged

This week is Open Access Week! 🔓

A lot of researchers have to contend with paywalls, but there's more than one way to make your research open access, including
🟢 Self-archiving your author-accepted version (Green OA)
🟡 Paying a journal's OA fee (Gold OA)
each with different benefits

This week is National Archaeology Week in Australia (https://archaeologyweek.org/) and each year people get creative with baking or making archaeology-themed creations

Since 2020, each year I've designed crochet creations. This year, a friend and I decided to bake a massive archaeological excavation cake! We shared it at work today and there's still more than half left

Here's this year's cake, plus my 2020 (Sahul) and 2021 (shell mound) crochet projects

A photograph of a crochet version of Sahul (Australia and New Guinea in green wool, with brown wool for the continental shelf connecting them) between two balls of wool. Text in the bottom left corner reads: "E. Rehn "
Three photographs showing different angles of a crocheted shell mound, made up of cockle shells in different tones of grey, pieces of black charcoal, and a small crochet tree. The background is grass. Text in the bottom left corner reads: ' E. Rehn (@BlueRehn)"
