For anyone around the world unfamiliar how the British establishment works, here in a nutshell is a guide. The Guardian has published a full members' list of the men-only Garrick Club. The club membership of about 1,500 is overwhelmingly white and predominantly elderly.
Read, my sisters, and weep.

Yes, I take it personally when you say you won't vote, or vote for the Dem. Why? Because among other things, the fascists tried to commit a Black GENOCIDE during the pandemic. Your actions or inaction will give them the power to do it again in some other way. My survival depends on them NOT gaining power. So does yours.

An Adelaide man, Alexander Dowie, once led 1000s of his followers to America to establish a strictly Christian utopia. They founded the city of Zion which still exists today.

An ordained minister, Dowie baptised dozens of devotees in the old City Baths on King William Street.

@shoq @WhippoorwillSong Have you tried putting the lignocaine on the area surrounding the scar, ie not directly on the scar?

Sounds like the air boot is the problem. Can you get a different one? Or can you put some padding in it so it's not in direct contact with the toe?

@kamikat @sewing I've got a lovely piece of fabric I was saving for a summer dress, then I remembered that the only places I go are shops and doctors appointments. ( I'm one of those vulnerable people who must not get covid.)

I'm more in need of pyjamas, shorts and lounging around at home clothes. Not so inspiring.

Agree that if you find a style you really like, that really suits you, make more than one, that way you can look great every day.

Revealed: legal fears over Michael #Gove’s new definition of ‘extremism’ - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/mar/09/revealed-legal-fears-over-michael-gove-definition-extremism "The communities secretary wants ‘trailblazer’ government departments to pilot a scheme to ban individuals and groups deemed extremist from public life" absurd and uncalled for...gove is such a failure

anne_twain,
@anne_twain@theblower.au avatar

@glynmoody The trouble with legislating this kind of thing is that "extremist" is a pretty subjective judgement. A regime could decide that anyone opposing it is "extremist".

Witness the legislation already being used to silence/punish climate activists in different parts of the world.

@perkinsy Australia seems very timid about trying new architecture that's better suited to our climate. Mud brick and earth bag construction have been known about for ages, and considering the insulation properties and low cost of materials, you'd think they would've taken off. They're also cyclone proof.

Is anyone counting the deaths that happen as a result of police car pursuits in #Australia?

If a driver is young and inexperienced, or a car is defected, how is it a good idea to do something that will encourage them to drive faster and more recklessly?

Innocent people die as a result of this activity, yet police accept no responsibility for changing their methods.

@melissabeartrix It's important to remember that fossil fuel companies have gazillions to lose from the transition to #EVs and a similar amount to spend on influencing public opinion against them.

That the guy interviewed is touted as a top internet debunker of EVs makes me immediately suspicious. Who's paying him?

If you want to know about EVs, ask the people that drive them. (I'm available to answer questions.)

#EV

anne_twain,
@anne_twain@theblower.au avatar

@melissabeartrix I don't agree there's a long way to go. I'm seeing more and more EVs on the road every week (they look just like ICE cars, so most people wouldn't know they're EVs, except maybe Tesla).

Most people charge their EVs at home, most of the time. It's incredibly cheap, so availability of public chargers is only an issue if you do long trips. I've had my car since Sept 2022 and I've never used a public charger.

If I needed to do a long trip, I might hire a car with a longer range ( I could well afford it considering how much I save on petrol), but public chargers are popping up everywhere now, so I probably wouldn't need to.

anne_twain,
@anne_twain@theblower.au avatar

@melissabeartrix There are answers to all of the points you've made, but I don't want to bore you with another info-dump.

But a quick one - EVs are no more likely to catch fire than any other car, it's just that journalisrs love reporting on it. (Fossil fuel influence again).

I appear to have got on top of the earwigs so now my cyclamen is flowering. This plant is in a south-facing courtyard so it gets little direct sunshine.

We are in the midst of a cool change after a 35+ degree day. It is still hot but we are getting big drops of rain. The first raindrops evaporated almost as soon as they touched the hot, hard surfaces outside.

Unfortunately we are not expecting much rain out of this change so with the big wind change the residents of Western Victoria fighting fires are going to have a hard time.
