    @josh Ohhh, that's why you're specifically in that part of the world! I hadn't twigged :D Envious!

    The best part about the London mayoral election? That the massively racist party (Britain First) are so unpopular that they were beaten by a man with a bin on his head (Count Binface).

    I am here! Very curious what Colorado's most (in)famous restaurant is like now.

    I have created a video that is ostensibly a travelogue about seeing the eclipse, but which is also a bit of a delve into taking the path less travelled. I would be delighted if you watched it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pba7IXuDnc

    Here's my take on the single-file Django project:

    @carlton @ehmatthes Yup, deliberately - I call out in the readme that if you want the ORM, just go do a big project, since you want the structure.

    NEXT MONTH: leering in Pittsburgh PyCon

    Friends, get off the Internet for ~10 minutes and go stare into the Sun, but "SAFELY."

    andrew,
    @andrew@aeracode.org avatar

    @webology My view on eclipses is very much 100% or bust. Even the weird dimming at 90%+ is only slightly odd compared to the sky breaking at 100%.

    I have now counted at least five news crews plus one news helicopter. This is a small town whose normal population is 6,000 people!

    Got to Houlton hours early, so I popped over to Canada to see the World's Longest Covered Bridge. I have to say, it is impressively long.

    Well it turned out I arrived into Boston just as an overheight truck tried to enter a tunnel it really didn't fit in, so I got to enjoy the environs of the airport around an hour longer than I was expecting. I have successfully escaped, though, and am on my way to try a highly rated burger place!

    Have arrived in Boston, which is somehow my first time in New England. So far the weather is reminding me very much of "Old" England.

    For reasons I won't go deep into, I have discovered that there are only six monorails still in operation in the USA, which implies a grand tour of all of them is very doable.

    andrew,
    @andrew@aeracode.org avatar

    @bitprophet I had somehow missed the Skycab, actually - it does not appear on one of the monorail category pages but does appear on the other!

    I did not realise that the Amazon Go/Fresh "just walk out" technology was in fact significantly powered by a thousand people in India manually labelling things. And now it turns out that they can't actually close the automation gap, they're ditching it as it's too expensive? https://gizmodo.com/amazon-reportedly-ditches-just-walk-out-grocery-stores-1851381116

    Redid my aviation weather map of Colorado in a 16x20 inch shadowbox frame, and expanded it to cover the whole state, which is conveniently the same shape.

    I picked the top fifteen airports by size and then a few more to get decent geographic coverage. Just in time for spring thunderstorm season!

    Since it's in Django News this week I should probably mention I put up a library for writing single-file ("Flask style") Django applications: https://github.com/andrewgodwin/django-singlefile

    It's not a lot of code, but it lets me quickly go use Django's templates, forms and generic views easily for things that don't need a backing database. You can see the app I'm developing with it here: https://github.com/andrewgodwin/emf-equipment/

    andrew,
    @andrew@aeracode.org avatar

    @mrchrisadams It's not as featureful as Airtable, but not bad, and given we need around 200 seats with SSO for two weeks, we had to go for something we could self-host.

    andrew,
    @andrew@aeracode.org avatar

    @apollo13 @mrchrisadams Yes, we ruled out Baserow because not only is SSO behind a subscription, so is... row colouring?

    I haven't written a custom widget yet but it's nice to have the option; they ship a whole bunch as well and we're using the QR code one.

    This is soooo cool from @andrew

    A Flask-inspired way to just get up and going with Django. If Flask can hide complexity, why can't we? Love it. Very cool all the magic is in an init.py file.

    Why does my house's sump pump always fail at the most inconvenient times?

    Anyway, the spare I keep next to it is now installed, and a new spare is on order. This one lasted two years, three months.

    andrew,
    @andrew@aeracode.org avatar

    @webology So far mine have failed mechanically rather than due to power, but at some point I need to figure out if I can raise it in the pit a little and make it cycle less.

    Trying to find good task dispatch/inventory/location software for EMF is tricky; we fall somewhere in between "trade contractor" and "emergency response" in terms of what we need, and pricing never works out well for "we have 100 users but only for a week every two years".

    If you know of anything relatively cheap or free that might fit the bill, feel free to let me know; I really, really want to avoid writing something custom.

    andrew,
    @andrew@aeracode.org avatar

    @glyph I'll take a look, but I've not had a lot of luck with software from other events so far (tends to be very specific)!

    Plotting my Solar Eclipse trip for April and while I know my general choice (I'm going to Maine, and doing Acadia NP at the same time), I'm split whether I should fly into Boston and drive up or if I should have a day in NYC and then fly up...
