Finally got around to spending three hours preparing all the documents to send to my tax preparer who will do the actual preparing to send 100 pages of US tax return. Hooray!

(The wonders of having "foreign" bank accounts and having a small LLC for workshop reasons)

Happy Birthday to that one Ask A Manager letter writer who finally gets to celebrate their birthday! https://www.askamanager.org/2018/01/i-paid-for-fake-references-is-it-rude-to-shush-someone-and-more.html#leapday

@jacob I had not seen this or the update and WOW

andrew,

@jacob As with many of the commenters, it's the doubling down on "well of course if someone has a birthday on a weekend we move the day off to the next weekday" that gets me. Plus the random throwaway comment that Jehovah's Witnesses are banned.

What have I been doing this Sunday, you might ask? Well, being nerdsniped into making an emoji coordinate system for @emfcamp based on space-filling curves, naturally (this one is the rather lovely Gosper curve).

I'm really disappointed to discover that the Fediverse apparently put so little thought into spam prevention. The entire history of email spam is right there to learn from. This current spam campaign is about as sophisticated as an email spam campaign from the 90s, yet apparently there's nothing I can do about it beyond playing whack-a-mole with blocking disposable accounts and servers.

I really hope I'm wrong here and missing something because if not this is super super super disappointing.

@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@jacob While I wish the Takahē way of "you can have multiple domains on one instance" had got more traction, if this comes for me I'm going to see if I can find a friendly server admin of a big server, donate them some money, and automate syncing their blocklist entries. Centralised moderation and federation control is the only way this is going to get solved, I suspect.

andrew,
@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@glyph @jacob True - what I more mean is "there needs to be a way for people to share the moderation load amongst a trusted group".

It is deeply funny to me that my experience trying to compile Nvidia graphics drivers on Gentoo laptops a decade ago so I could get 3D working is suddenly incredibly relevant to my work.

Had a great little roadmap-ideas session with a good cross-section of Django people first thing this morning, and some good ideas came out of it (they should be up somewhere soonish).

Many thanks to @thibaudcolas for arranging it!

New job means it's time to set up all my Gmail filters once again, read a lot of HR onboarding, get access to umpteen new systems, and take detailed notes on the onboarding process to improve it for the next person.

(My actual first week was last week at an in-person offsite, which is an intense but useful way to start a new job)

Somehow got a free upgrade on both my flight to San Jose and my hotel once I got here. Clearly it's a good day!

What would be the one episode of Game Changer that you'd show a friend to convince them the show is great and worth watching?

"Lie Detector" is the actual first episode and pretty high on my list of bests, but I think "Do I Hear $1?" might be an even better introduction. Or maybe "Sam Says"? "Like My Coffee"?

UGH, so hard to choose just one! What would you choose?

andrew,
@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@jacob Do I Hear $1 and Make Some Noise are my two highlights from early seasons I think.

Finally finished The Talos Principle 2 and I think I put it on as equally high a pedestal as the first. A powerhouse of puzzle design and environment design; some of the set pieces are really incredible.

andrew,
@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@mattcen You should REALLY finish the first one before starting 2 unless you already know about the big spoiler for the ending of 1.

andrew,
@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@mcc It does! And you can opt to play in third person too, as well as a bunch of other nice screen-fatigue options.

Sadly, the winter storm moving into the New Mexico / Southern Colorado Rockies area is severe enough that I've had to abort my trip leg to Four Corners and Mesa Verde - I called ahead to my next stop and the conditions sounded terrible.

18 inches of snow and -25°C/-7°F overnight is not something I really want to chance - the van can keep a +30°C temperature delta, but doing it alongside that much snow is pushing it. I'll plot a new route in the spring to see those two, and maybe some Utah!

andrew,
@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@joshourisman Oh I'm fine, I made it over to Las Vegas so I just have to go straight up I-25 tomorrow.

andrew,
@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@joshourisman @bitprophet Las Vegas, NM has a population small enough that everyone could stay at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV if they were two to a room!

Drove through a snowy but beautiful northwestern New Mexico today and stopped off at the Very Large Array. It's quite something to stand under the dishes as they're moving - and also gaze out at something that I've known as a science icon for so long.

There's a winter storm warning for tomorrow so I'll have to see if I can safely make it to Four Corners. If not, I've got a decent set of other overnight options I can bail out to.

A distant view of the Very Large Array. You can see all the dishes, including one on the eastern leg that is misbehaving and pointing the wrong way.
A close up of one of the dishes, letting you see inside to the receivers at the centre of the dish.

Just looked at my destinations on this trip and it seems I am going to end up at a properly, properly dark location in the Rocky Mountains right around a new moon. I am excited to be able to get some proper dark sky viewing in!

My current campsite (Villanueva State Park) is also pretty dark, but the moonrise is before midnight tonight, so I can get a little viewing in but not the proper stuff.

I am currently between jobs for a few weeks and so what better course of action is there than to take the camper van and head out on a five-state (just) trip to see four national parks and finally stop in at the Very Large Array?

andrew,
@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@bitprophet Nah, I hadn't talked about the new job yet, partially as there is some stuff related to the job that I left that I need time to process.

andrew,
@andrew@aeracode.org avatar

@bitprophet There's a reason I went south rather than north - shouldn't be too snowy down here, and the van can cope with decent levels of snow and cold if it has to.

Trying to find a good iconography for US states is basically impossible. Flags are out because some are way too complex, and state outlines make Colorado and Wyoming impossible to distinguish!
