Question for the non-Brits that follow me: Do you have pancake day?

Winterbay,

@DJDarren Well, I say nope, we have "Fatty Tuesday" on which we eat Semlor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semla?wprov=sfla1) which I guess is sort of related. But no pancakes anywhere 🙂

Looking for #VideoGame recommendations.

I'm looking a co-op game to play with my wife that has a decent story, and that can be played in the same room?

We played It Takes Two recently, which was fun (although incredibly difficult in some places), but it seems to be fairly unusual in that it it's a split screen. Most co-op games these days seem to need to be played separately, meaning we have to communicate via voice comms.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren If you liked the storytelling of It Takes Two then Josef Fares' earlier game A Way Out may be of interest. If you want harder things then I guess Cuphead could do.
Untitled Goose Game ks hilarious and has couch coop as well.
Spiritfarer is beautiful and slow paced but does deal heavily with death at its core story so discretion may be needed.

Happened upon a brilliant record that’s outside my usual field this morning.

Been watching a lot of #Taskmaster lately, so looked on Apple Music to see if the theme tune was on there. It’s not, but there was a track with the same name, so I played it to see if it was a version.

It wasn’t, but it was great, so I listened to it, then cracked into the whole album, which is great.

Anyhoo, enjoy.

Really interesting to see a split on opinions on the Apple fora re: the App Store being split.

Personally, I’d like to see iOS working the same way macOS does; that is, you can download any app you like from wherever you like. But a significant number of people are forseeing all manner of doom down that road.

But I don’t really see that. I mean, masOS isn’t brimming with malware, so why would iOS be?

I’m willing to be educated otherwise though.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren And most of the malware on android come via malicious applications that make its way through the official store anyway.

I was using a different name for my band for YouTube videos and then I searched and found it was the name of a band in the northeast.

So I selected this name, checking if it was being used and checking if it existed on the map.

I’ve had notice outside of the US and brave announcers in other countries have not translated the pomegranate part.

Probably better for them, I think, as I read this Hacker News headline “Man arrested after confusing Portuguese words for 'pomegranate' and 'grenade'.”

Winterbay,

@pomCountyIrregs The Swedish name for it basically translates as "grenade apple" and I've always been very confused with why it's called that 😂

Related: I didn’t take my pill this morning, so I’m fucking grumpy.

That said, it’s not necessarily the lack of pill. It’s the on display up the Asda, and the fact that the Scan & Go app kept defaulting back to the home page, so almost every time I scanned an item it paused my music DESPITE ME SPECIFICALLY TELLING THE APP TO MAKE NO NOISE.

I fucking hate Asda.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren I am convinced that ASDA attracted the weirdest people. My employer had the contract to supply their branded diapers for quite some time and the number of really effing weird complaints we got was insane. Like several "my kids got chemical burns from a diaper" a week, the same diapers, with a different backing print, that's in sale all over Europe without any issues I'd like to add...

Listening to the new blink-182 record this morning.

It’s classic blink, so if that’s the kind of thing you’re into, then you’ll like this. The mix sounds really compressed though, which is really distracting.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren Now you reminded me of this meme I saw the other day 🙂

Winterbay,

@DJDarren Same numbers, diferent order 🙂

Being on the crane training course yesterday highlighted a very important hole in our working procedures that no one here has apparently considered until now.

We have pre-use checks for our cranes. A simple Google Form to answer yes/no that serves to highlight any issues that need attention.

Turns out that the brake on one crane is fucked, which has been reported over and over again, but the manager of that department apparently doesn't actually look at the reports.

Winterbay,

@WizardBear @DJDarren Yeah.. whoever did the audit of your quality systems needs to get fired.

Listening to the latest Folding Ideas episode while I'm working. It's all about the /r/WallStreetBets run on GameStop, and how mad and stupid it was.

He's just said "Despite its reputation, finance as a subject...is a lot less impenetrable than it seems. Wall Street is awash with B- students who wrapped their head around, so you can too."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pYeoZaoWrA

Winterbay,

@DJDarren It was, as usual, very funny, thought provoking, and good. I liked it a lof.

There’s nothing quite like doing the weekly shop to bring out my inner misanthrope.

People completely unaware of their surroundings, families on a big outing, kids running around.

Why do people go up the Asda as a family? Surely it’s worth it to the parents to take turns doing it so they don’t have to corral their pissed off, bored kids about.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren I mean being two means you can carry twice as much which quite often is needed when we do the weekly shopping. And if the kids are not of an age where you can just leave them at home but big enough to not be in a pram that's what you get 🙂

Something that always strikes me when I’m Off The Sugar is how much less interested in eating I am. Which is disorientating, because food is my comfort.

It does go to show that I’m fat not because I don’t know how to eat properly, but because I don’t know how to comfort myself properly.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren The school health services here thinks of daughter is overweight and keeps referring us to various nutritionists and exercise coaches but we already know all the food facts thru come with and she already has activities basically every day (dance x 2, orienteering, swimming) and they never answer our real question which is: how do you teach someone how much is enough food?

Good timezone fediverse,
Today's song is Painted Floors by ÄNN

ÄNN is an Austrian indie pop artist who realized early on that making music is her favourite way to communicate. But constantly battling insecurities and self doubt made it hard for ÄNN to be her authentic self for a long time. In her debut album “A.M. Forever” she sings about growing up, the end of relationships, experiences of racism, depression, and self-doubt

I need to know; is birthday cake with candles a global thing, or primarily just the preserve of Christian/western culture?

Winterbay,

@DJDarren This seems to indicate German origin in the middle ages sometime with an indirect link back to the old Greeks:

Just been comparing the specs of the iPhones 14 & 15 (not Pro), and they’re essentially identical, save for a significant bump in the camera on the 15, and slight processor spec increase. Oh, and it has a Dynamic Island and USB-C (limited to USB 2 speeds).

A fine upgrade if you’re rocking a XS, I suppose. But honestly, if you’re in the market look for a new 13 instead.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren As a person who's only apple device is their work phone I temd to use the lightning for data transfer whenever I need to get a photo off the device. I've never logged in to my apple account on any other system because why would I?

I find myself wishing I had the money, skills, and patience to build an M1 Mac mini into the case of a G4 Cube.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren Me, I wouldn't. But then I gave up on thinking Apple would ever make a product I found useful for me and/or good looking long ago.

Please don’t try and force your communication preferences on others.

I was involved in the setup of a huge job here last year, part of which involved me putting together a Google Sheets spreadsheet to track the work hours.

I created a Form, linked it to a QR code, then the guys working on the job would (in theory) scan it at the end of the shift, and input their hours.

Once a week, I'd go through the data, attributing each line to an aspect of the job we wanted to track.

All in all, it worked pretty well.

Winterbay,

@DJDarren Question: is the phone provided by the employer? Because I'd also be extremely wary of using my personal phone for things at work - if my employer wants me to do things with a mobile phone they'll have to provide said phone for me (which mine does).

Good timezone fediverse,
Today's song is Zu Asche, Zu Staub by Severija and the remix of the same song by Parov Stelar

Severija is a Lithuanian actress working in Germany, chiefly known for her role in the series Babylon Berlin for which she recorded this song. Parov Stelar is an Austrian DJ who is mostly making electroswing remixes, but this one is a bit more of classic electronica

There’s a Heardle Decades game where you have to guess the year a song was released.

Yeah, the metadata on the song needs to be correct for this one to work…

Winterbay,

@DJDarren If it's using Spotify as the source I'm not surprised. They are more often wrong than right when it comes to release dates.

Been thinking a lot lately about whether I'm not cut out for the route I want to take in my career, or whether the company I work for is so disorganised that it's making me think that way.

If I worked for a company that actually knew what it was doing, would my mind be clear enough to be able to get on with work without feeling the need to procrastinate all the time?

Winterbay,

@DJDarren Unrelated but I didn't know that the "not my circus" expression was used in English as well. Only knew of it from German but have now looked it up and it appears to be Polish in origin.

(also, so much of what companies do is a reaction to external forces - be it regulation, NGOs, audits or customer questions. that's going to be the same in most places though from different angles usually. I'm working in a relatively highly regulated industry that should in theory not but you know...)
