Watch this satellite obliterate the Kuiper Belt object moving through this set of images.

The dumb satellite is so bright that our auto-detect software threw out the whole stack, because it destroyed the average brightness.

It pisses me off to no end that my taxpayer-funded telescope time is now less and less effective because of one for-profit private company.

(P.S. software dudes: please don't try to mansplain workarounds, believe me, a LOT of astronomers are working hard on this)

A gif of a Kuiper Belt object slowly moving across a set of images. It just looks like a fuzzy dot. Toward the end of the sequence, there's a super bright diagonal line that covers up the moving dot - that was a satellite.

@anathema_device I had two chainsaws given to me by a friend who works for a saws and mowers type shop to see if I could fix them. Got both working like new and gave them to a couple of young fellas who gave me a hand on the weekend, clearing trees that fell in the storm a couple of weeks ago. They were absolutely stoked, cost me nothing but a bit of time. I got some firewood, the neighbours got the trees cleared away. Love it when things work out like that. 😊

When I was a teen, I was aggressively anti-theist, imagining myself quite clever for demonstrating how silly religious beliefs are.

But life is fucking hard and I learned not to begrudge anyone any solution they’ve come up with to make life a little more comprehensible to them.

I don’t share anyone’s religious beliefs, but it’s not as if I’ve figured out how to run my own life successfully. I shouldn’t be in the business of telling other people how or how not to handle the world.

That makes any harms from religion outweigh their utterly replaceable and exaggerated benefits.

Religion, however?...
Actively, and violently suppressing dissent against something "sacred" and unquestionable is religion's brand, and the principal source of harm.
