So what type of colonizing did your family do?

Rob_T_Firefly,

@moonlitfractal @BlackAzizAnansi Same, all my American immigrant ancestors got here in the early 20th century, but they did settle onto colonized territories taken from the Lenape, Canarsie, Wappinger, and other peoples where I've also stuck around.

https://native-land.ca is a good resource for folks interested in their area's indigenous peoples.

Greetings from #Wisconsin.

I'm John Mastodon.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@bytebro @maddiefuzz @RadicalEdward I think Mastodon is a pretty cool guy. Eh toots memes and doesn't afraid of anything.

@Rob_T_Firefly do you happen to know the name of the bot that is used on hackers.town to get FB ASN notifications?

Rob_T_Firefly,

@jan I'm not an admin or anything here, I'm not sure what's in place for anything. I'd direct you to the affable mayor @thegibson for any such questions.

Becoming increasingly averse to the words "Social Networking."

Fucking seriously, come up with a new idea.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@thegibson @signal9 The real social media was the friends we made along the way.

thegibson, to random

I have no idea what a homestuck is and now I 'm too afraid to ask...

Rob_T_Firefly,

@thegibson Whenever it's mentioned I choose to believe everyone's just misremembering "Homestar," and then go on another binge of old Strong Bad emails.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@randomgeek @deadbeefmonster @maddiefuzz @thegibson As a mostly hardware person, I'm totally comfy building a box but if code is poetry I'm a hapless Vogon. I can meddle when I need to, but mainly in ways which cause great distress in people who know what they're doing.

signal9, to random

I was confused until I realized that MetaText is showing me boosts, which I’ve had disabled for months. I do hope I can turn them off.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@voltur @deadbeefmonster @thegibson @signal9 If you're following someone who boosts too much for your liking you can hide boosts from their profile while still letting their own toots through, but I don't know if setting that on desktop extends to client apps.

My sister in christ... I am on LinkedIn and happily married... it's not a dating service.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@thegibson Did you accidentally have that "open to sexual harassment" flag on your userpic?

Listening to some asshole who was on the radio last night.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@thegibson I'm telling Alex what you just called him.

Imagine having the complete scripts (game code) of all Sierra On-Line games that use the SCI engine published between 1988 and 1996 fully decompiled, human-readable and annotated.

Yes. 100% of the scripts. 100% of the games.

SCI mastermind sluicebox did it again!

If you want to learn about the full story, ranging from a deep-dive into the code and tales about the history of Sierra's script language and previous reverse engineering efforts, check out

@OffTheHook @thegibson Good episode! Thanks for shedding light on things and your unique perspectives :)

Rob_T_Firefly,

@shamfer @deadbeefmonster @OffTheHook @thegibson I would have loved to pry more info out of him, but then he'd get whisked away to eternal torment in the cDc's phantom zone.

You ever just stop and think about how weird it is that devices like the Power Glove existed at all in that time period?

Rob_T_Firefly,

@deco @thegibson OMG! That's amazing.

Rob_T_Firefly, to accessibility

Reddit has now sufficiently broken their own site that moderators of the blind community's subreddit who are themselves blind can no longer access the moderator tools.

This statement by the mod team is worth a read to understand the full extent of the failure.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/14nzwkm/they_finally_did_it_reddit_made_it_impossible_for/

Edit: it's also worth noting that this community now has a dedicated Lemmy instance. https://RBlind.com

Rob_T_Firefly,

@xogium Good point! I should have added https://RBlind.com to my post, I'll edit it in now.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@dekkzz76 You might check out https://RBlind.com where there's some interesting discussion about that very subject happening.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@beforewisdom Reason to stay off the instance that developer controls. The RBlind instance has nothing to do with them. They have also been vocal about needing to use something that currently just works rather than wait for another platform to sufficiently mature, and Lemmy was pretty much the only choice; there's some of the discussion at https://www.rblind.com/post/1791750 .

Everyone has to make their own choices when benefiting from the work of awful people. Do we still accept a needed ride in a modern Volkswagen-made vehicle even though the company was started by the nazis? Should most of the Linux installs out in the world include support for the ReiserFS filesystem even though the developer turned out to be a murderer? Can I still live in my country despite it being founded on oppression and genocide? These sorts of questions are everywhere, and so many things in our day-to-day lives can be connected to the actions of truly bad people if we dig deeply enough.

I can fully understand not supporting things which directly reward awful people in tangible ways. I wouldn't use the Lemmy instance the developer runs, or contribute money to that project. However as open-source software like Lemmy effectively doesn't belong to anyone (or, to put it another way, belongs to everyone) I personally find it good to see such things used by people who can benefit without directly rewarding the parson in charge, and in fact used for the tangible benefit of communities directly opposed to the founder's brand of bullshit.

I have a cardioid mic, and my coworkers swear they can't hear my snoring dog on Zoom. She sounds like a chainsaw in my monitor earphones, though.

Rob_T_Firefly,

@tek @Wrewdison I wrangled Zoom for a synagogue's Rosh Hashanah service, which involves blowing a shofar (a ritual musical instrument made from a ram's horn) and the tone is an important part of the observance. Much to general disappointment, Zoom took that as unwelcome noise and filtered it out as well. 🤖 :flan_shrug:
