And these are the before and after pictures of the cast metal frame. I used deoxit and an old cloth and cotton buds to remove the dirt and cover the metal at the same time with the deoxit, which usually gives a very thin coating that will protect the metal. Smells horribly though. :)
I think I will need to lube the top and bottom ball bearings of the spindle. The top one I can reach easily. For the bottom one I probably have to unmount the flywheel, but I don't want to...

A much cleaner metal frame, with significantly less visible corrosion

Random_Seed,
@Random_Seed@bitbang.social avatar

@root42 electroplating. I have a similar issue with corroded cast Aluminium. It needs to be anodized and the plating cured.

Random_Seed,
@Random_Seed@bitbang.social avatar

@root42 haha. It’s actually pretty easy. You need some chemicals, containers, aluminium wire, cathode and anode (aluminium) and a power supply (bench works well). https://www.wikihow.com/Anodize-Aluminum

Found this all in one computer on a scrap pile, it works if you plug in a HDMI display so I guess that's something, it's interesting though, the motherboard is "thin-Mini-ITX" (according to the manual, never heard of that before) so maybe I can use it for something dumb idk

Random_Seed,
@Random_Seed@bitbang.social avatar

@kiwa it’s a storage consumption apparatus.

Found this in a bunch of stuff I recently acquired. Brings back good memories. It’s a 3.5” magneto optical disk from the 90s. Magnitudes more reliable than other removable storage technologies with a lifespan of 30 + years. The 5.25” disks hold up to 9.4GB. I’ve only come across SCSI MO drives of these types but I believe Olympus made usb versions of the 3.5”. #retrocomputing #macintosh #opticaldisk #removablemedia

I’m blocking VCF Actual (@admin) as they flippantly belittle the concept of art being made by human creators, and they choose to use ripped off art via AI regurgitators. If you support creators, I ask you to consider also blocking them.

@europlus what did they do?

kalleboo, to Japan
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

Our eldest daughter is starting elementary school in #Japan in April and we have to submit bank details for a direct debit for school fees

The debit system used is some local thing only supported by the local banks, and the application is done on paper.

There's a pre-filled out section for how the school is going to submit the debits with the options for

  • Paper ledger
  • Floppy Disk
  • Magneto-optical
  • DVD
  • Data transmission

I'm sad to say my daughters school did not choose floppy disk 😢

Random_Seed,
@Random_Seed@bitbang.social avatar

@kalleboo freaking love that format.

Random_Seed,
@Random_Seed@bitbang.social avatar

@kalleboo in my Dads studio we never got any Iomega stuff. It was all MO. The small floppy size disks went from 130MB to 230MB and 640MB (as far as I know) and then there were SyQuest size ones holding 2.6GB (double sided 1.3GB) and 5.2GB also double sided. I’ve still got the Sony 5.2GB SCSI drive and a pile of disks. I miss the FWB 230MB.

Random_Seed,
@Random_Seed@bitbang.social avatar

@europlus @kalleboo haha, I remember that tool! Like a thin screw driver with a thin shaft and flat end. The handle was a see-through green. They were fast and made an awesome RW sound.

My BlueSCSI Wi-Fi Desk Accessory for System 6+ is now available:

https://jcs.org/bluescsi

It lets you view your current network name and signal strength, and change networks on the fly without having to edit your BlueSCSI configuration

Perfect for taking your 68k PowerBook to the coffee shop (but who would do such a thing?)

@jcs omg. This just is just so damn elegant.

Well, I just placed orders for boards and parts to build a new Lisa 2/5 around my existing Lisa CPU card, the only part of a Lisa I’ve ever owned.

I would never have thought this was possible if it weren’t for the work of @DosFox who recently built the first new Lisa since 1986! Thanks for the inspiration!

I’ll continue this thread as parts roll in. I may ask (beg) if folks have some parts in your bins! 😀

It is a gorgeous sunny day - and our tree is thriving.

We were a bit concerned with how it would do in the London clay, but with a bit of TLC, a splurge of food, and plenty of water, it is growing up quickly.

Huge thanks to https://www.hardy-eucalyptus.com/ for the plant, accessories, and advice.

Perfect example of Boletus edulis versus Tylopilus felleus. B. edulis has a white netting, dark brown cap and white line at the cap, and yellowish tubes. T. felleus has dark netting, light brown cap and pinkish tubes. And it is BITTER.
