When I drove up my driveway yesterday I thought oh, lord, there’s a rattle snake and almost didn’t get out to look. But I did, and it was a pacific gopher snake. 🥰🥰. The medallion on its head is a defining feature. We also have bull snakes, another kind of gopher snake with big jaws, that strikes like a rattler. One scared me in the chicken house a few years ago.

Rough textured tan snake with brown and black spots. No rattle. Medallion on its head led me to identify as a pacific gopher snake.

Permacultureandpolitics,
@Permacultureandpolitics@beekeeping.ninja avatar

@Pagan_Animist We have LOTS of snakes here, seems like all kinds. When I lived in Virginia a high number of the ones I saw were copperheads. Something about the environment seemed to favor them at the expense of other snakes.

Saying “I support the right of Jewish people to exist” is already a little weird to me since I don’t see that as questionable (guess it is for some) but it definitely sounds bad if you add a “but” on the end. That’s not as supportive as you think it is, people who keep saying it.

    @QasimRashid we need to end Citizens United for many reasons, but one is because food and ag corporations have lobbied Congress since Earl Butz, and very few people know the consequences of eating junk, including overweight, diabetes, heart disease, many cancers, overtaxed bones and joints, Alzheimer’s (also called diabetes III), etc, etc, etc. it’s not a trifling matter. YES approve more medications, but understand that’s applying more bandages to a very deep wound.

    Mystery apple with missing tag. I’m almost positive it is a zabergau reinette, but have only gotten 1 apple off it so far. I am tempted to graft a known zabergau scion onto it and compare. #grafting. #apples #orchard

    This time of year salads consist of old kale, kale and radish flowers, fennel, miner’s lettuce, radishes, and occasional add-ons from the store.

    @Permacultureandpolitics@beekeeping.ninja avatar

    @thepoliticalcat It's in there. See the photo in the same thread. I had a LOT of kale flowers, though. More than any other green. And yes, some raw asparagus I threw on top.

    Miner’s lettuce. I tried to grow it in the garden in Virginia and couldn’t, but it grows wild under oak trees here. It’s a mild, juicy, crunchy green when there’s not a lot else to eat.

    Someone ran away as soon as I put the little sombrero on her. Hubby stopped her so I could take a picture before agreeing with her that it was a stupid hat and taking it off. #mastodog. #dogsofmastodon.

    last night over dinner my wife casually dropped that seven hardy almond trees are arriving in a few days.

    two weeks ago, also at dinner, she dropped that five persian mulberry, two apricot and two arctic kiwi were arriving.

    i need to stage an intervention.

    then i need to find their forever homes.

    @Permacultureandpolitics@beekeeping.ninja avatar

    @michael @plants all of those are delicious, although you guys will need to spray the almonds and apricots with a weak copper and neem solution to keep fungal diseases at bay since you (like me) are a little north for them. I spray 3x in spring and once in fall, never while flower buds are open so I don’t hurt any bees.

    Lab grown meat isn't an economical alternative, even if you're ok with "animal cell slurry."

    The solution is to STOP buying any commercially grown meat - because it's usually from a CAFO or if it's in a fast food restaurant, from Equatorial countries. Buy less meat, and buy it from small farmers.

    If your EVs aren't selling maybe that's because you're making giant fucking trucks and SUVs and hyper-expensive luxury sedans and the kind of people who want EVs mostly just want a compact car for getting to work and running errands.

    Just sayin'.

    @tess I live in the country and want an EV pickup, but I dont need a behemoth. Something the size of a Subaru Brat with AWD would be great.

    Did I already post this? Doesn't matter. It's grafting season and I'm going to post it again for all of you who need it. Grafting is the best way to get exactly the tree you want.
