Paperposts

@Paperposts@zirk.us

Now my primary account - supposed to be a home for all my paper, design, art, poetry and ephemera ramblings. But is ending up a place I post bird and landscape photos, with the occasional climate, environment and tech bits thrown in.
Avatar shows a person with a lens over one eye. Header background says “missed it” but the CMYK colour is offset too much

Just had to remind myself (if somewhat after the fact), that even if the quote sounds good, if you don't know the author or the context, best not boost.
I think I should write my self a boost plugin, that throws a checklist:

  1. Do you know the tooter
  2. do you know the context of the content
  3. do you know the people/things mentioned
  4. are you sure you get this

I love the name of these weird black fungi that I see growing on oak trees in northern California: cramp balls (Annulohypoxylon thouarsianum). They're maybe 8cm or so in diameter.

    @LeftistLawyer there was a gravestone where my wife’s grandfather is buried that says:

    For it was the wind

    @ai6yr backup power for cooling and refrigeration makes so much sense but that’s probably a lot more power than most folk think - unless both things are designed for very low power use.

    Words on signs and displays are dangerous. The wrong kerning, bad spacing or odd sizing can cause all kinds of horrors. And certain words like 'exchange' can be tricky when paired with others, but without a doubt the most dangerous is 'analytics' or 'analysis'. Especially when used by the unaware on makeshift displays.
    Never ever ever use folding displays, like this.

    After a thorough inside and outside audit with my thermal camera (FLIR), things look pretty good for my thermal envelope. (did not check the attic, however). Interestingly enough, the most obvious heat loss (aside from a wall panel and roof area missing insulation) is along the bottom of the building slab.

    @mjausson @ai6yr @samhainnight yes! For me they are like the fake cakes in shop windows - icing over cardboard. I miss solidly built, well insulated houses, with real walls. But i feel it’s a fair price to pay to not have 3 months of freezing ice rain driven by a gale into your face every time you go outside.

    Dwell magazine's Alana Hope Levinson has written a thoughtful feature on the joy of "puttering" — relaxing by carrying out low-stakes household chores — and you can read it here. But we got distracted by the language used in the article, since, she claims, "puttering" can also be referred to as "piddling," and where we come from, you certainly don't go piddling around the house. What word do you use for the pastime of puttering?

    @CultureDesk I just found another Pootle reference (via the infinite Pooh bot). Piglet gets called Henry Pootel Piglet by Christopher Robin.
