Welp, I suppose I needn't worry about SEO for aetheric-games.com .... Google just simply won't search for it. Searching for "aetheric games" returns results for "aesthetic games" no matter if you use the "search instead..." link, if you use quote marks, or even if you use "verbatim" mode. 🙄

The web has never lived up to its promise, but remember when it used to work kinda, maybe sometimes?

It's human to want to simplify a complicated situation. It's human to want to believe that people who are more ethical, or more attractive, must be more talented. From where I'm sitting, these are completely disconnected variables. (If there are studies correlating them, I'm unaware of them.) But when an artist people like turns out to be a bad person, it seems like it's easier to decide their art was bad all along than to accept the broader idea that terrible people can make excellent art.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mogwai_poet
I often find that, when this kind of thing happens, the bad stuff is already baked into the art, whether people saw it or not. The example I always go to is Lovecraft. Doesn't matter as much if people are shocked by the name of his cat when you consider that he wrote many horror stories where the primary scary thing is mIxEd rAcE fOrEiGnErs oooOOOooo!!!! Same with JKR, if you look closely at any of the philosophy/politics/morals of the stories they always were utter, utter garbage.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mogwai_poet
Totally, and I agree with the idea that we should be critical of the art we enjoy, and can enjoy art we're critical of.

But I struggle with the other idea: "separate the art from the artist" because, how does that even work? Art is such a personal thing, the artist is all through it. And if it was even possible to make art and not put any personal expression into it, would even be art?

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mogwai_poet @Cheff
I totally agree. Wholeheartedly - two things can be true. 💚

But also, sometimes, two things can be exclusive.

And I guess that's a two things true moment 😅

After 6 months, I've had to resubscribe to Adobe PS. I work with too many people who send me PS files and there is no alternative that can open and save them reliability. It sad how many "helper" apps Adobe installs and how often they try to connect to the internet. I block them all, but it's scary. I have to unblock them every 30 days. Please do not suggest alternatives unless you know for a fact they load and save .psd files seamlessly. Do not suggest GIMP or I block you.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@BreoganHackett @grumpygamer I know this is probably not a popular answer, but that's exactly what I thought and what I would do. It's totally reasonable to ask for a specific file format, especially when it's work for hire. It would be weird of them to refuse, imho.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@raodaozao that's easy. left and right is when the dot product is zero.

something in my thought cabinet that I don't have any conclusions on yet: most forms of development planning I've worked with in my career have amounted to some form of acknowledging that you can't accurately estimate complex tasks, but then go and pretend you can accurately estimate small tasks, and precede to make up a set of small tasks, make up estimates for them, click them together like lego bricks, and viola there's your ship date or stack ranking KPIs or whatever

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva the way I look at it is, you do all your estimation and such, and you get a duration x. The real duration will be somewhere between sqrt(x) and x^2. But in my experience (mostly teaching) hard part is getting people to grasp how wide that range is, and then to believe you about it.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva and then sometimes it just turns out to be x^x

Finding a GOOD Blender learning tutorial for the basics and modelling (you know something where you actually LEARN something and not just follow steps to make a donut with sprinkles) is really hard. But I am currently following this (see link below) and I am having a good feeling about that guy. :)

Unfortunately there is also a lot of shortcut work in this tutorial and while I get this is important, it's TERRIBLE for beginners.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xAumJRKV6A

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@memoriesin8bit totally agree! Keyboard shortcuts should be considered "advanced", imho. There's a reason we have a gui. It's like a menu, it should tell you what's possible. You can't memorise every input any more than you can memorise every function or verb, otherwise we wouldn't need a gui at all.

MrBehemo,

Steam syncs specific paths and you just have to read and write to them. In my thing I had a user folders in place already, and then I just made it check the steam folder too, and just when you're about to upload something it makes a copy of it in the steam folder.

There's a little process of API callbacks where you check if an item exists, or get an I'd number if it doesn’t. Then create the online item, then upload the files, and metadata.

It wasn't trivial, but easier than I expected.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko If you want to include a custom mod browser in-game or hotload mods, that's teensy a bit more complicated, but it's still just API calls.

Germany’s out of hand, crazy version of anti-antisemitism continues in full swing. Last week cancellation of Nancy Fraser, this week that of the rector of Glasgow University.

Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a British-Palestinian medic, has claimed he was invited to give a conference in Berlin about his work as a surgeon in Gaza but was denied entry to the country.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@pvonhellermannn @zleap It's much older than that. It's just from Latin for a stranger, a foreigner, or something "other".

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/alienus#Latin

"Space alien" is from the 1920s. But that wasn't really a new meaning - it's just like "space foreigner". More recently we started thinking of it as a synonym for "extraterrestrial."

But my point is, it would have been just a normal word when the acts were created, in various languages inheriting from Latin.

I'm (substitute) teaching game programming at a school (teen to adult, C# with #Unity) rn and have noticed the students struggle doing even quite simple assignments, like adding a public field and using replacing a literal with that field. Any tips on good ways to train the very basics?

In addition to my teaching, they've been following Unity tutos and CodeAcademy C# lessons.

#gamedev #gameprogramming #programming #csharp

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@arzi Sounds like a similar age and experience to my class. I usually start with really basic stuff outside of a game engine, in a c# console app. Really basic stuff... like hello world ...then edit the literal string ...then replace it with a variable ...then we take some input and store it in a string ...then we join 2 strings and echo them back. Then eventually after a few weeks, they might be able to do a basic number guessing game in the console. And then we look at a game engine.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@arzi And actually the "engine" we look at is MonoGame, which is not so different from the ramp up.
So maybe this advice is useless, if you don't have the time or options.
That said, it might be worth spending a week on the basics, removed from the cognitive load of a game framework.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@arzi Totally get that. Just to be clear, my advice wasn't "abandon Unity", it was "spend a little time on C# fundamentals". But I know how tricky it can be working around someone else's plans and restrictions. :)

Possibly the dumbest hustle culture take I have seen so far. Quoth the linkedin nutcase: "The 'weekend' concept is barely 100 years old"

Has this dude never heard of the Ten Commandments before? "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy"

The Sabbath is also known as the biblical "day of rest." It's Saturday. Saturday is for rest and contemplation, not work. It continues to amaze me just how smug the wilfully ignorant are. The weekend is literally thousands of fucking years old.
