Some teachers are now using ChatGPT to grade papers

New AI tools aim to help with grading and lesson plans—but they may have serious drawbacks.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/03/some-teachers-are-now-using-chatgpt-to-grade-papers/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@arstechnica First off, I doubt this is very widespread at all. Second, that is not what teaching is. That's not "teachers using a tool to teach better", it's "institutions devaluing their staff using tech that supposedly cancels out their work but in fact merely creates more work, which either goes undone, harming students, or becomes more work for less money".

@sos Dunno, I think that "DYK? [important accessibility feature] is secretly [genuinely hostile tech that your audience are already concerned about], but maybe I'm joking... 😉😏🤔" is a kind of crappy thing to say from a position of influence.
Even if it's 1% true, then it's still 99% harmful.

ohh I'm so glad I ditched my wordpress blog in favor of Hugo a couple weeks ago. Also sucks for Tumblr.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink seems to me that there are a lot of websites confusing people about this, because this is about the wordpress.com website, not the wordpress.org cms. Like when MS scraped github, but not all git repos everywhere. Kinda silly for the cms software and the blog platform to have the same name and logo. Still... Good for you for making your site more performant though.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink well yeah, ideologically it sucks, and is part of the enshittification of everything. I think both the platform/business and the nonprofit that supports the open source project were founded by the same person. But the software is still open source / GNL, thankfully. I say "thankfully" because I started setting up a new wp site just 4 days ago, after considering a few SSGs like Hugo, so the news gave me a shock 🤣

Basically it sounds like you'll be able to opt out starting tomorrow, and if you opt out immediately your work won't be scraped. Still a lot of questions though.

I just heard a designer in a say, "it's not a short game: it's like 3 or 4 hours long." And at first I nodded and then I laughed out loud. I don't disagree! I think that 4 to 6 hours feels like a "normal" length to me. But it was funny to me to realise the disconnect between our perceptions as vs Teh Gamers. The majority of beginner game dev students I meet would say 4 hours is very short.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

And that correlates with feedback like Steam reviews, where we've all seen someone complain that e.g., £10 is too much for 4 hours of engaging art/entertainment. I feel like that's wrong, but I don't know what can be done about it other than telegraphing the length of the game as hard as possible before purchase.

“When this Low-Oxygen Quartz becomes infused with natural metals, it begins to channel the positive and negative energies of the universe. I am re-reading Dune. This quote by the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is remarkable:

“Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”

It's not about a Terminator-style AI-apocalypse where the machines want to kill us all dead. It's just an accurate prediction of what actually appears to be happening.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@TomSwirly @_RyekDarkener_ @hllizi That's true, but it also means that the taboo has stood for 10,000 years and is still effective (so far). I guess that fact actually points to the astronomical disparity in wealth, education, and access to tech - also relevant IRL.

When Brits want to address a woman respectfully they say "mom." When they want to address a mother they say "mum." When they want to refer to staying quiet they say "moom." It's turtles all the way down the vowel chart

MrBehemo,

@mogwai_poet
I think you're thinking of RP English specifically, where "ma'am" is closer to "marm" like a "school marm". UK media does such a good job centering privelege that it's convinced the world that a rare accent specifically associated with aristocracy is basic "British".

Hot take: Opinions about difficulty from people who are bad at a game are just as valuable as opinions from people who are good at it.

Okay, most game devs know this. But, I wish gamers did too. It's a pain whenever valid criticisms about difficulty is raised, because the most skilled gamers will always go "lol u suck" or "git gud". Happens every time.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Nifflas Something I see with beginner-devs is they have to learn that making a game harder can be trivial, but making a game more approachable/accessible can be complicated.

I think that's counter-intuitive to gamers, especially if they haven't thought much about design. Almost like they think an easy game means lazy devs, but a hard game is itself a worthy adversary.

If only they knew how hard it is to design a puzzle that makes them feel clever or a challenge that makes them feel skilful.

It's all new for me, studying Unreal Engine I try to compare it with Unity

In Unity you create a shader first, then create a material from it. In Unreal you create a Material... this is the first thing that seemed strange to me as a developer on Unity.

The first thing I thought was that the concept in Unity should run faster because I'm creating a shader. To answer this question for myself, I need to find a pipeline illustration of how it works in both engines

Was brainstorming ideas for a game (is it brainstorming if I'm doing it by myself?).

And was trying to explain the limited agency of the player story-wise, as: "You are a friendly ghost, help Tom by..."

I was thinking about Casper. But I thought that no one knows about Casper in this day and age so I pivoted to: "You are a friendly AI, help Tom by..."

Uh, I don't hate it. Should I? Friendly and helpful AI certainly could exist, right? Right? Please say yes...

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@afreytes That could totally work! Depending on what the player can do.

Also, I've played at least one game where the player character is literally a disembodied ghost-slash-mouse pointer. ("Goetia")

@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Let's talk philosophical game dev nonsense!

Imagine three chests, a "bad, good and best" item. You don't know which is which, just pick one.

Okay, now take Mario Bros 3. It has this scenario, but through emulator you can find out, the item you get is (timer based) RNG. Which chest you chose is not the deciding factor.

Does it matter that the presentation doesn't match reality? That you couldn't have picked a better chest? Even though you had no basis for an informed decision either way?

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Nifflas Maybe the 3 chests will be open so the player can see, then I'll randomise them, with some kind indication that they are being shuffled, but that you cannot possibly observe or reason it out (e.g. shuffle them impossibly fast, or behind a screen)... and then the player gets their guess.
