Ads are the most effective way to monetize a large scale consumer service. Companies like Perplexity & Discord who brag about how they’ll never run ads only to quietly update their narrative when investors ask for revenue growth just end up looking silly.

If the product doesn't show ads, contain a search box or collect data that can be used to target ads then you can assume Google will eventually shut it down.

I have tailored all of my usage of Google products based on that heuristic.

The issue with complaints about Spotify not paying artists well is that the actual problem is that the price of the service is too low relative to the value it provides. All the music ever produced for the price of one CD a month.

But raising the price won’t work given piracy.

Streaming video (TV and movies) have at least as many issues for the creators without half as much benefit for the consumer
