Hell yeah, best time with the best music!
Those were the days when we’d go out at midnight or in the early hours in the morning and party like crazy then go to work/school the next morning. After work, we’d do it all again. Great times. Love this beat.

TERENCE TRENT D’ARBY
Terence Trent D'Arby's Neither Fish Nor Flesh: A Soundtrack Of Love, Faith, Hope, And Destruction
1989 U.S. pressing

TTD had a massive ego, & fancied himself the second coming of Prince.
Trust me.
I met him.

The reality always was that he was a cheap dime store poor man’s version of Prince.
Only without the hits.

That being said, his 1st album was pretty decent. It even had a hit.

This one though?
👎
Terrible and pretentious.

Who is an artist for you where, when you hear them, regardless of song, album, whatever…
INSTANTLY makes you cringe and sends you into a fit of rage?

An artist or band where you’d rather slice your own ears off than ever hear them again.

Mine is easy.

What about you guys?

All you young people posting CDs. 😭 I do have this on CD, as well. And on the original vinyl. I'm old. 👵🤷‍♀️

In all formats tho, I have absolutely played this album to death over the decades...

First we have Alejandra Guzmán AKA La Reina de Corazones with her take on “La Plaga” AKA “Good Golly Miss Molly” (https://youtu.be/I80g5eo71Yo?si=lLqafTuEpa6T2q8t). Some of y’all will remember her father Enrique Guzmán y Los Teen Tops and their version of the song (https://youtu.be/JfNhew2Wu-U?si=qOdeX_86WDQH_P0s) from our first #RetroView Cinco de Mayo party playlist (bit.ly/3w5mAR7)

Next we have the CDMX-based early new wave/post-punk band Size with “GoGo Girl”. They were only together for a few short years but their impact on Mexican music is pretty undeniable

Since this week's theme is and I was born April 1980, I have to talk about TELEKON.

Gary Numan released Telekon, my favorite of his records, in 1980. It was the first vinyl I bought as a teen in the 90s. Hearing this intro track and the album that followed was mindblowing. Definitely listen to this whole record if you get a chance.

Here's "This Wreckage", the first song on Telekon, one of the best album opening tracks EVER:

This week's theme is . I was born in April of 1980, and there were SEVERAL great albums that came out that year.

But my top choice for that year has to be DEVO.

Devo released their third record Freedom of Choice in May 1980 with the magical song (and my favorite song on the album) 'Gates of Steel' opening up its second side.

On this day in 1980, the South African government banned Pink Floyd's single 'Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)' after Black children adopted the song as their anthem in protest against inferior education.

TIN MACHINE
Tin Machine
1989 Canada pressing

I love both Tin Machine albums, but it has less to do with Bowie than it does with Reeves Gabrels. His guitar playing on both is otherworldly.

This album is better than the second on whole, but still not looked upon favourably by Bowie disciples and I don’t know why.

It is a killer metallic slice of art-rock. A pre-cursor (along with Pixies) for what would happen throughout the next decade.

BUGGLES
The Age Of Plastic
1980 Canada pressing

Fun on a Sunday morning.

THAT song was (and still is) so big, that nobody ever really talks about how good the album is as a whole. It’s a super-fun slice of innovative & never disappoints whenever I put it on.

Trevor Horn had a magnificent career as a producer post-Buggles, but had this been the only thing he’d ever done, that’s a career enough in itself.
Love this album so much.

I enjoy 1 song from Trans-Europa Express ("Metal auf Metall"), tracks 2-6 from The Man Machine, and all of Computer World.

PLATINUM BLONDE
Standing In The Dark
1984 Canada pressing

I had never heard of them until Id moved to in ‘07, where copies of their records are abundant and in every used shop.

This is a fantastic power pop album, start to finish. Great hooky songs.

However, this is where it kinda ends for them.
After this, the band added a keyboard player, and everything got very… . And not in a good way.
But there’s no denying how good THIS one is.

A fun listen for the Hump Day blues.

So that’s probably hitting the table after this gem.

SUZANNE VEGA
Solitude Standing
1987 Canada pressing

One of my favorite female artists, & a total comfort album for me.

Sometime around 2001, Suzanne did a meet & greet/in-store performance at the record store I worked at in Harvard Square (it’s sadly no longer there).

She was so incredibly wonderful; staying for much longer than she needed to. She met every fan, signed everything, & hung out with us staff afterwards & told us dirty jokes. She’s the best.
