I splurged on a new-to-me used camera. I decided to go back to using a digital camera, rather than my smartphone one. As someone who stuck to film SLR cameras for years, I've finally found a digital one that has an nice optical lens without paying an arm and a leg. I'm looking forward to taking decent nature pics again. Speaking of which, some pics of the calm before the storm...

Thousands of #eels die mysteriously in #NewZealand

"'We noticed some algae build-up, which generally is due to the stream water warming up,' said Hona Edwards, a member of a local guardian group that monitors the stream.

"'Then the biggest percentage of the stream was observed to range from very limited to no water flow. When there’s no flow, the dissolved oxygen reduces, and the toxins build up in the waterway,' he said.

"Such algal blooms occur when conditions such as warm water temperatures and low water volumes are coupled with nutrient flows from agricultural use and toxic #pollutants from human activities.

"While mass deaths of freshwater fish are known to occasionally take place across the world, a study of lakes in #Minnesota and #Wisconsin in the United States found that such incidents have increased globally in the past decade."

Youths Raising Voices for -- 'Our Liberation is Linked'

By International Indigenous Youth Council, Oglala Lakota Chapter via , March 29, 2024

"In a world plagued by injustices and oppression, the youth of the raise their voices in support for Palestine. As descendants of a people who have faced centuries of systemic violence and displacement, we intimately understand the pain and suffering inflicted by colonialism and genocide.
Just as our ancestors fought to preserve our way of life and sovereignty, we stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people as they resist occupation and defend their right to self-determination. The parallels between our struggles are undeniable, rooted in a shared history of dispossession, displacement, and cultural erasure.
The ongoing atrocities committed against the Palestinian people, including the recent escalation of violence and displacement in , serve as a reminder of the urgent need for global solidarity and action. We refuse to remain silent in the face of oppression and injustice.

"Together, we raise our voices to condemn the brutal acts of violence and state-sanctioned discrimination perpetrated by the Israeli government. We demand an end to the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands and the immediate cessation of all forms of violence against civilians.

"As Oglala youth, we recognize that our liberation is intricately linked to the liberation of all oppressed peoples around the world. By standing in solidarity with Palestine, we reaffirm our commitment to justice, equality, and human rights for all.

"Let us unite in our struggle against , , and . Together, we can create a world where every individual and community can thrive in freedom and dignity."

Hmmmm.... "The rain can help dillute sewage." Um, does not eliminate the problem!

Raw sewage spills into England rivers and seas doubles in 2023

By Esme Stallard and Jonah Fisher, March 27, 2024

"The UK has combined sewage systems which mean rain and sewage share the same pipes, so if there is too much rain sewage treatment works can be overwhelmed. Sewage is spilled into waterways to prevent the system backing up.

"It works out that on average last year there were 1,271 spills a day across England, compared to 825 in 2022.

Contained within the spills is human waste, wet wipes and sanitary products, which can pose a serious risk to the local wildlife, swimmers and others who use UK waterways.

"The rain can help to dilute the sewage but academics warn there is still a risk to the local environment and anyone swimming in these bodies of water."

How Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring’ Awakened the World to Environmental Peril
Carson's 1962 bestseller first warned the public about the devastating effects of chemical pesticides—and started a revolution

By: Cate Lineberry
April 22, 2022

"Carson had resisted writing the book for years because of these anticipated attacks from the chemical companies as well as public officials who had accepted their false claims. 'It was a David versus Goliath sort of saga,' says Lear. 'She was uncovering industrial misdeeds and, in the course of that, bringing down powerful men who had been entrusted by the public and shown to be unworthy of that trust.'"

"As transportation networks expand and urban areas grow, noise from sources such as vehicle engines is spreading into remote places. Human-caused noise has consequences for wildlife, entire and people. It reduces the ability to hear natural sounds, which can mean the difference between life and death for many animals, and degrade the calming effect that we feel when we spend time in wild places."

#StandingRock: FBI had up to 10 informants during the #resistance to DAPL

The FBI's special agent in charge, reveals in his lengthy deposition, his search for the motivation of Standing Rock #WaterProtectors to make their stand -- and he fails to find the most obvious -- The Protection of the Sacred

by Brenda Norrell, Censored News, March 15, 2024

"In a new court case, the State of #NorthDakota claims it didn't have enough resources during the Standing Rock resistance to Dakota Access Pipeline, and wants the U.S. to pay up. The testimony reveals that the FBI had up to 10 informants, not just FBI informant Heath Harmon, in the camps.

"'Up to 10 informants managed by the FBI were embedded in anti-pipeline resistance camps near the #StandingRockSioux Indian Reservation at the height of mass protests against the #DakotaAccessPipeline in 2016,' Alleen Brown reports today at Grist.

"'The new details about federal law enforcement surveillance of an #Indigenous #EnvironmentalMovement were released as part of a legal fight between North Dakota and the federal government over who should pay for policing the pipeline fight. Until now, the existence of only one other federal informant in the camps had been confirmed.'

"'The FBI also regularly sent agents wearing civilian clothing into the camps, one former agent told Grist in an interview. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, or BIA, operated undercover narcotics officers out of the reservation’s Prairie Knights Casino, where many pipeline opponents rented rooms, according to one of the depositions."

women in sue over in the 1960s and 1970s

By The Associated Press
Updated March 4, 2024 9:27 am

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — "A group of Indigenous women in Greenland has sued Denmark for forcing them to be fitted with intrauterine contraceptive devices in the 1960s and 1970s and demanded total compensation of nearly 43 million kroner ($6.3 million), their lawyer said Monday.

"The 143 women say Danish health authorities violated their when they fitted them with the devices, commonly known as coils. Some of the women — including many who were teenagers at the time — were not aware of what happened or did not consent to the intervention.

"They each are demanding 300,000 kroner ($44,000), the women’s lawyer, Mads Pramming, told The Associated Press.

"The purpose was allegedly to limit population growth in Greenland by preventing pregnancies. The population on the Arctic island was rapidly increasing at the time because of better living conditions and better health care. The small T-shaped device, made from plastic and copper and fitted in the uterus, prevents sperm from fertilizing an egg.

"Danish authorities say as many as 4,500 women and girls — reportedly half of the fertile women in Greenland — received coil implants between the 1960s and mid-1970s.

"In September 2022, the governments of Denmark and Greenland launched an investigation into the program. The outcome of the probe is due next year.

"But Pramming said they won’t wait until then, and that the only option for the women is to seek justice through the court.

"'The oldest of us are over 80 years old, and therefore we cannot wait any longer,' one of the women, Naja Lyberth, told Greenland public broadcaster KNR. “As long as we live, we want to regain our self-respect and respect for our wombs.”

Fukushima nuclear cleanup remains plagued by complexities
Story by Julian Ryall, March 11, 2024

"#Japan on Monday marked the anniversary of the #March2011 earthquake and tsunami that destroyed three of the six reactors at the #FukushimaDaiichi nuclear power plant.

"Shortly after the magnitude-9 earthquake struck on March 11, a series of tsunami inundated four of the reactor buildings and set off a chain reaction in three reactors that resulted in the release of significant amounts of radioactivity into the environment.

Tens of thousands of local people were quickly evacuated and, over the following years, the reactors were stabilized.

The challenge in recent years has been to gather the large amounts of nuclear fuel that escaped from the reactors in order to halt the release of more radiation — something that had never been attempted before and has to be carried out in buildings where radioactive contamination remains dangerously elevated and where debris from the tsunami and subsequent hydrogen explosions still litters the area.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), the operator of the plant, has estimated that work to make the plant safe will take between 30 and 40 years, but recent reports on progress at the site have been largely negative.
TEPCO delays test work

In January, TEPCO announced that it would have to delay plans to commence in March the test use of a robotic arm to remove radioactive material from the No. 2 reactor. The initial plan called for tests using the robotic limb to take place in 2021 but were delayed by technical glitches.
