How to start a fight with old-school nerds everwhere.

"The editor wars are over. VScode won."

#editors #vim #emacs #microsoft #vscode

CrashCarroll,

@roygreenhilt
Grr! I'm coming to your house! By the way, where do you live? :)

There will be another new popular winner in the editor wars at some point. #emacs - my favorite - won't be that winner, or the next winner after that. But Emacs will be around, and it will continue to be very, very good. All you #vim, #sublimetext #textmate #notepadplusplus #atom #vscode users you are all still my brothers and sisters in software development. Though I have to say I am still giving the hairy eyeball to you Vim folks :)

I'm an infertile atheist. In a fit of desperation while doing IVF, I went into a church and promised that if I could have children, I'd have them baptized. I had twins and returned to fulfill my promise because of superstition. I was then told that because they were IVF babies, they had no souls and couldn't be baptized. So, I went back to my original FUCK RELIGION stance. ๐Ÿ™„

CrashCarroll,

@StillIRise1963 @jamusb Not sure what church you went to, so I cannot speak to the terrible thing you were told. There are literally thousands of churches out there with some better than others. One of the bigger ones, the Catholic Church, has a different perspective.
https://www.catholic.com/qa/what-to-say-to-ivf-children
If some Catholic priest says something to you that sounds nutty, and you want to know the true teaching of the institution, consult the official Catechism of the Catholic Church. See article 2373 to 2379 for the stance on some of the points you raised (each article is about a paragraph, it won't take too long). My suspicion is that baptism of your infants was withheld because you considered the faith to be superstition. A mature person has to make a commitment to the faith to be baptized; for an infant to be baptized, the parents must make such a commitment. From what little I know, that sounds like a deal breaker for you. If it isn't, and you still want to fulfill your promise, try a Catholic church.

I received a Google Open Source Peer Bonus award, which was a pleasant surprise. :) Thinking of ways to reinvest it into Emacs and the community to see what a little money earmarked for that could do. People have already donated enough to to cover hosting costs, so that's all sorted out. Might see how USD ~250 could be used to help me make more blog posts and videos. Could start with experiments with speech recognition or NLP/AI for outlining/summarizing/cleaning up my audio braindumps. Paying for cloud usage will let me do tiny experiments without upgrading my X230T for now. We'll see!

CrashCarroll,

@sachac So happy to hear you were recognized! Your leadership and generosity (especially in terms of time) inspire me to do more in my own life in my communities.

Running a special Cybering Monday deal: no paywalls, no forced login, no adverts all over the screen or in the middle of content, no video pop-ups, nothing sucking away your data, no pop-ups to ask you to do anything.

Oh wait, that's just us normally. You're welcome internet.

CrashCarroll,

@gamingonlinux Liam, as a regular reader of your site I have to say that I am grateful for your work. Really, I ought to have noticed before now just how unintrusive and friendly your site is. I had already noticed how awesome your content is.

But I am also jealous of your life. Want want want ๐Ÿ˜€โ€‹

Yay, all the talks uploaded so far either have captions or volunteers are working on captions for them. That's 4 in progress (127 minutes total) and 20 finished (365 minutes). One week to go. I can use the next few days to test the infrastructure and improve the process documentation (especially those just-in-case scenarios!) before I might need to do any last-minute captioning. Mildly stressed, but I know we'll all manage to figure things out!

CrashCarroll,

@sachac Yaaaaay Sacha!

Trump knows what heโ€™s doing when he calls his enemies โ€œverminโ€ in his speeches and online. Heโ€™s dehumanizing them. This has happened to my community twice in my lifetime: once during World War II, and again during the pandemic. It is so dangerous, and Trump knows it. Heโ€™s preparing his base to do things that you canโ€™t do to other humans, only to subhumans. Be warned. Be vigilant.

CrashCarroll,

If it is Christianity or Judaism you are thinking of (again that is "if"), check out Genesis 1:26. Humans are the only ones made in God's image. If you don't put any stock in the Bible, no reason to put much stock in that statement. I often think that dogs treat us and each other better than humans do. That said, if I had to choose between my dog and my wife, suffice it to say a) there would be zero hesitation and b) I'd miss my dog terribly.

Our :emacs:โ€‹ Emacs.ch VM celebrates its first birthday in 5 days ๐ŸŽ‚โ€‹ Without a single reboot. Zero downtime. And, as is proper for a well-managed instance, blocked by mART.

How did Mastodon change your life? ๐Ÿปโ€‹ It certainly had a great impact on mine.

CrashCarroll,

@louis Congrats and thanks. As a Twitter/X refugee, I appreciate your efforts to create and maintain my now-not-quite-so-new home!

I keep seeing people online saying that #Linux isnโ€™t ready for professionals, or that the Linux desktop isnโ€™t for doing real work, or this usual ยซ year of Linux desktop ยป meme.

So I thought Iโ€™d address the topic, because Linux is undeniably already being used by professionals all around the world, and definitely has a lot of tools to do professional work, either #OpenSource or proprietary:

CrashCarroll,

@thelinuxEXP
If you are a professional developer who deploys to the cloud - any cloud - chances are you are targeting Linux at some level. If you want to develop software for Linux, the best (or at least a super-good) place to do that professional work is. Hmm. Lost my train of thought :)

The lack of self-awareness in a thread I just witnessed is pretty stunning.

Consider the possibility that the reaction you get from a community could be a reflection of how you present yourself and your criticisms.

Was that ruling made just for Christians? I'd hate to see SCOTUS say: all you orthodox Jews, you all have to work on Saturdays. And don't forget Rosh Hashanah. All you Muslims, better see you at work for Ramadan. But you Christians, since you are specially favored, only you get to observe your special days. Again, those are things I'd hate to see SCOTUS say. It would be best if all faith traditions were respected, in my opinion, as much as possible.

CrashCarroll,

@GottaLaff I may live in a good bubble, possibly. I had an awesome boss who was an orthodox Jew, and when he had to go home early-ish Friday afternoon in winter, everybody was cool with it. Yay! I work with a lot of Muslims, too, and no one protests "But we have a deadline!" when Ramadan rolls around. Again: yay! That said, I am sure that all of those people have endured ill-treatment that I have not personally witnessed. On the other hand, I have heard untruthful anti-Christian comments made in public forums at work that no one challenged (raising my colors here: I am Catholic). Not asking anyone to cry for me, though ๐Ÿ˜€โ€‹. Guessing that you and/or a loved one have endured ill-treatment for non-Christian faith beliefs; if that is the case, I am sorry to hear it.

Keyboard and mouse sharing apps Barrier and Synergy are not working with Wayland yet. For some (me included) this is a dealbreaker for Wayland. Since I also stand strongly against picketing, I don't know how to express my opposition to Wayland.

  • CrashCarroll,

    @AndrewGowen @mookie Totally agree that one should be free to not practice religion. Maybe I misunderstand: it sounds like (again, maybe I am wrong) that keeping the Bible at home and church means that religious discussions should be excluded from the protection of free speech? Religious discussions are only for church or home? What if your religion does not even have a church - maybe you worship nature outdoors? Could go on, but I think you see where I am heading with this. Again, sorry if I misunderstand.
