"The #cement industry alone accounts for nearly eight percent of human-caused CO2 #emissions.

The Cambridge researchers approached the problem by looking at an industry that was already well established—steel recycling, which uses electric-powered furnaces to produce the alloy.

Instead of waste being produced, the end result was recycled cement ready for use in #concrete, bypassing the emissions-heavy process of superheating limestone in kilns."

CelloMomOnCars,
@CelloMomOnCars@mastodon.social avatar

" An electric arc furnace needs a "flux" material, usually lime, to purify the steel. At the end of the process, the used flux is discarded as a waste material. So for the Cambridge method, the lime flux was swapped out for the recycled #cement paste. And sure enough, not only was it able to purify the steel just fine, but if the leftover slag is cooled quickly in air, it becomes new Portland cement. "

I am grateful for our comfortable basement and for the good weather warnings these days. I can't believe that some new houses are being built here without basements. I read yesterday that Iowa has already had 83 tornadoes this spring, and it isn't even tornado season yet. Insurance companies are pulling out of Iowa because storm damage losses are so great. #ClimateChange

In other places, more prone to flooding than to tornadoes, a basement is a liability.

With climate change, we need to build according to the local conditions. Really can't use the same cookie cutter all across the nation any more.

Why the we all need to tell our friends about what #WhatBidenDid to protect the climate:

  1. Federal climate action is popular.
  2. It get more popular once you explain it.
  3. People hate Trump’s positions on the issue.

Also this summer is expected to bring searing heat and mean hurricanes: Stay safe, AND use them as opportunities to talk about climate change.

"The boom in clean energy projects is astounding. Since the passage of the IRA in 2022, incentives provided by the law helped drive $332 billion in new investments in #CleanEnergy and transportation technologies. Almost all of that was private investments, as opposed to government spending, spurred on by an estimated $48 billion in federal tax credits.

While much of the #IRA is working as intended, the American public is largely unaware of the story."

It doesn't make sense for them to insure / invest in an industry that makes their payouts to homeowners much higher.
Honestly they're shooting themselves in the foot in the long term - maybe they're just looking for the next quarterly results, but I suspect their actuaries (if they're worth their salt) are starting to get louder in their warnings.
