#OnThisDay, 23 Aug 1941, American Virginia Hall arrives in France to work for the British Special Operations Executive for 15 months. The SOE supported the French Resistance to Nazi occupation.
Hall was on the “most wanted” list as 'the limping lady', as she had a false leg due to a shooting accident before the war. She escaped over the Pyrenees to Spain. She then returned to France with the American Office of Strategic Services.
#OnThisDay, 22 Aug 1943, Yvonne Cormeau parachutes into France to be a radio operator for the British Special Operations Executive. The SOE supported the French Resistance to Nazi occupation.
‘The Holocaust happened on British soil’: Inquiry into Nazi camps creates bitter divide on Alderney.
An official investigation of claims that many more people than previously thought died during Nazi control of the Channel Island has pleased some, but dismayed others.
#BookRecs I recommend reading The Pope at War by David Kertzer, so long as you are up for immersing yourself in the details of Vatican policy during World War Two. I live in an area where Pacelli, the pope during that period, is highly respected. He does not deserve that respect. The most frustrating thing about books like these is that they will never reach the audience that needs them most. Here is a link to my goodreads review. Note: I am not interested in arguing with Pacelli’s supporters. #Books#History#Bookstodon#Holocaust#WorldWar2#Fascists#Reading#BookReview#GoodReads#JewishAuthors#Jewish
I am finishing reading this delicious historical novel that will go directly in the #littlefreelibrary afterwards. If you love stories with strong women, generational drama, the fresh smell of bread and the Parisian atmosphere, you will surely love it as much as me !
Valiant Women is the story of the 350,000 American women who served in uniform during World War II. These incredible women served in every service branch, in every combat theater, and in nearly two-thirds of the available military occupations at the time.
A search has begun in France for the remains of dozens of German soldiers said to have been executed by French Resistance fighters during World War II.
Coming 79 years after the alleged killings, the search was sparked by statements from a 98-year-old former resistance fighter, Edmond Reveil, who has gone public with the allegation in recent years.
Something from my wife's side of the family for today's #ThrowbackThursday and this clearly comes from the World War 2 period. Left-to-right in the photo are - according to the back of it - "Alan, Grandad, Digger". The truck is a British Bedford QL army truck, but you knew that already.
A story connected to these three is that they were once transporting a tank in England and lost it en route. No more details forthcoming, sadly.
The difficult reconciliation of the memory of World War II with mass tourism in the Netherlands.
Residents of the Dutch estate portrayed in the TV series ‘Band of Brothers’, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, will install a fence and charge for photos to stem the flow of tourists.
The residents of the area want to strike a balance between preserving the past and their privacy.

She's never captured.
As of 2021, she was alive and well in New Zealand.
Very early #OnThisDay, 30 April 1944, New Zealander Nancy Wake parachutes into occupied France to be a courier for the Special Operations Executive. The British SOE supported French Resistance to Nazi occupation.
Nick-named 'the white mouse' by the Gestapo, she is never captured. She died in 2011.
I'm not one for "New Year's resolutions", but I am one for overly ambitious projects.
For 2023, Project365 is "One New Game Per Day".
Given that I have 634 unplayed games in my Steam account and {mumble} unredeemed bundle Steam keys, there's a reason my unplayed collection is tagged "Pile of Shame".
I'll pin this to my profile, and give a brief summary here each day (or x, if I miss x days due to work or stuff).
I'll play 15-30 minutes of (at least) one new game I've never played before (or played less than 15 minutes of). I'll give every game at least 15 minutes, even if I hate every minute of it.
I'm also open to suggestions; if you reply to this thread with a game, I'll schedule it, or tell you what I thought of it.
One of the things that's come up is that I have a bunch of games that I've played once, and not touched again.

(Housekeeping: I've said previously that I won't review sequels unless I've played the previous games, but I'm qualifying that to say I will play them if I don't own any of the predecessors. Carry on.)
Sudden Strike 4 is a real time strategy game set in World War 2.
I fell in love with RTS games with Dune II (RIP), and played through many of the Command & Conquer games, Warcraft II (I still have the manual!), and up to StarCraft.
StarCraft was where I started falling out of love with the RTS genre. I realised that I was struggling to keep up with all of the different things I needed to, and that combined with being the main strategy in multiplayer seemingly Zerg rushing, I stopped playing.
I was since diagnosed as autistic & ADHD, and (at least for me), I find complex RTS games overwhelming.
It didn't help that Sudden Strike 4 threw me into the tutorial as the Germans. I just don't play as Nazis, ever. It's too on the nose in 2023.
I got out of the tutorial, played the first match of the Allied campaign, and it's a good looking, solid RTS, but just a bit much for me to manage.
