It all starts with someone from your contacts book (another hacked account) messaging you and asking you to make a simple search from your Telegram account. This search includes a ‘Give_from‘ keyword in search, and then the hacker will ask you to send a screenshot of the search results.
Essentially, any request from a friend asking to do a Telegram search for them, and a screenshot should immediately alert you:
They will simultaneously send a Telegram login code to your device/number which then is a part of the chat screenshot that you share with the hacker. Once they receive the login code in the screenshot, the so-called favour is over as they can now login to your Telegram account and have access to all of your contacts. Obviously, others from your phonebook are now going to be targetted the same way.
@ksv236@hn50 Oh I’ve been following #Telegram for years, this is probably their mildest offense. They have literally turned users over to the police in multiple nations for what they’ve said on their service.
When I update Telegram's web client webk.telegram.org the app's tab goes blank. Now I get the same when updating the main client web.telegram.org. What gives?
This has been occurring on chromeOS for the past several months. The issue was reported long ago but nothing happened:
I filed a bug report to Telegram about the [web|webk|webz].telegram org web app going blank when clicking the UPDATE button. We'll see but I'm not holding my breath.

@Natureshadow but telegram values privacy and doesn't mine data for ads. It'll probably be the only proprietary platform I'll ever trust and use to be honest, which respects user privacy and super valued product. Also #telegram doesn't waste money on marketing etc unlike other platforms. And the founder isn't money greedy too. Other apps, is just money greedy, addictive algorithm based, money and time sucking tech. Telegram is used all over the world to avoid surveillance. Give it a try
There's this attitude that Mastodon does everything perfectly when it comes to combating racism, harassment, and other problems, which I find somewhat strange.
Mastodon does well, for example, in enabling server level blocks and defederation and the ability to import (hopefully curated) block lists from other users, although the latter functionality is not obvious to many people.
The number of severs, admins, and moderators also contributes to better human level attention of moderation issues.
@gwynnion This point applies to just about any social media platform. Do you think Twitter/Instagram DMs are not visible to Twitter or Instagram owners? Or that messages you send in Facebook Messenger are invisible to Meta and it's advertising and data collecting machine? Have we so easily forgotten the entire Cambridge Analytica scandal and how large corporations use the data on the social platforms (including private messages) in order to target you with advertising or social campaigns?
It's great that you brought this up in discussion, this just shows the need for everyone to jump ship to a trully private, secure and end-to-end encrypted messenger solution.
There's #Signal which is really easy to set up and use. All you need is a phone number and you're done. #Telegram also encrypts your messages if you use the private chatrooms, and you can also set your phone number to be hidden, and use a user ID instead for searchability. Want even more security and descentralization as well? there is #Matrix and @joinjabber that allow you to pick any server and client of your choosing (Matrix encrypts all your messages by default, on XMPP there is a thing called OMEMO which is server and client (or app) dependent - more details here).
Or you can just create a #PGP key and encrypt the text you want to send on Mastodon like that.
I know it all sounds too complicated for the average folk, on one side, but on the other, if we do not understand technology, it's limitations and it's capabilities, we will never get to use it to full potential.

First, #nazism is illegal in #Brazil. You cannot walk around wearing a swastika or be part of a #neonazi group. You are going to be prosecuted for that.
Then, in November last year, a teenager killed four people and hurt twelve more in a school-shooting. Earlier in April, a man invaded a kindergarten and killed four children.
After the second episode, on April 14, the government released an ordinance for social networks due to school violence.
On April 10, the federal police requested from #Telegram all of its data on a #neonazi group. The teenager responsible for the November 2022 attack was found to be a member of that group, and its owner was already known to be responsible for sharing violence-supportive content.
On April 19 (nine days later!), #Telegram replied providing only partial information on the owner of that group, but nothing on the other participants. By then, the April 14 government ordinance was already in force.
On April 20, the #Brazilian federal justice determined that #Telegram should provide all the information in 24 hours or be suspended countrywide.
On April 21, #Telegram informed it was no longer possible to share information on the group because it has been deleted. But the federal police is aware that the group was still active on April 20 at least until 5:42PM.
On April 26, the #Brazilian federal justice determined that all the major mobile carriers, #Google, and #Apple should block #Telegram countrywide.
Do not get me wrong! #Censorship is bad and I do not support it!
But this is not what is going on in #Brazil right now. #Telegram is clearly trying to play the #Brazilian legal system here. #Durov "stand(ing) up for our users in Brazil and their right to private communication" is pure bullshit.
#Telegram was blocked in my country (#Brazil) yesterday on all ISPs, and soon they will be removed from App Store and Play Store ... that's why decentralized communication apps are so important, apps like #Session and #Matrix are trending here right now.

Telegram is decentralised long ago. If a set of groups and people misuse signal and matrix and the court orders for data which either signal r matrix fails to deliver and if the court gets angry on that they may ban it. So I prefer using #telegram still for its features and privacy. Telegram is used all over the world(even in banned countries) to avoid surveillance.
