Meine #NixOS Container auf #Proxmox updaten sich alle selbst. Historisierung und Schutz gegen Probleme beim Update machen bei mir #Snapshots und #BorgBase. Deal with it. #Meine Container, meine Regeln.
does anyone know of a stupid simple proxmox UI/API App or some other Hypervisor that i could give people access to self clone a BASE VM image and run it.
These are non-technical people that i want to basically give a Start/Stop/Revert option to, without to much more. and without having to spend hours teaching each person.
Power of running #HomeAssistant as a VM: I had an integration (Xiaomi Gateway 3 which I use to control BLE Mesh bulbs) misbehave in the latest 2024.1 version of HA, so I just reverted the entire VM to a snapshot i made before installing it, in TWO SECONDS.
and yes i am still wildly passionately in love with #tailscale and need to find a handle for them in federated space. still like #zerotier! but tailscale on #tvOS is a killer app.
sidebar: #proxmox's kernel is spamming errors in the #E1000 driver code so i need to find a half-height 10Gbps ethernet adapter or two. sigh.
Anyone here make the jump/upgrade from Proxmox 7 to 8?
How did it go? How long it take roughly? Any suggestions on guides (besides official documentation) or any issues to report or things to prepare for or check?
Been meaning to do it but dreading it. (And also dreading to find out it’s easy and I’ve delayed for nothing). #Proxmox (maybe #MastoAdmin too, In case anyone else is hosting their instance or other stuff off PM).
Okay #Linux folks, I am torn between #proxmox and #xcpng to run on my new server coming next week. I'm leaning towards xcp-ng but I really don't know what the better of the two would be. I am torn.
This might sound silly, but I installed virt-manager to make things a little easier when using qemu, then created a new virtual machine with debian 12 on it... then installed qemu on that.
The actual reason for this is to make github account separation a little easier...
If you get virt-manager set up properly, it definitely makes using qemu easier, though. I practically just had to tell it to make a new virtual machine using this iso with this much memory and this big of a hard drive, and it was right at the debian install screen. (Set it up with xfce...).
Main tricky parts were that I had to install libvirt first, make myself a member of the libvirt user group, enable the service, and install dnsmasq. Not great, but could've been worse...
Used debian on the virtual box just for a little variety. I like to keep my hand in on different distributions a bit.
@SweetAIBelle makes sende tho you propably just went "hard mode" with QEMU/KVM.
There's a reason why I'd likely just use #ProxMox or even #ESXi instead, tho that's only because I've to deal woth these professionally and developed some speed at using them, not necessarily because it's the best approach.
It's kinda like Simon Smith using #SCORE vs. @tantacrul using #Sibelius:
@SweetAIBelle given #Oracle's hostility towards #FLOSS and blatant disregard towards commitments done by #SunMicrosystems when they were (sadly against everyone but #FTC & @EU_Commission 's decisions) allowed to absorb #Sun I think that is sadly more necessary than ever before.
Were it not for the absurdly high cost of electricity in Germany (~€0,33/kWh) I would've already converted several Workstations into Servers running #ProxMox.
I make due with some hp t620 #ThinClients that are fanless…
I've been using this latter approach for half a year now.I have a couple of services exposed to the internet via Cloudflare Tunnels. For the rest of the #SelfHosted services I have on my #HomeLab,I access them remotely via Tailscale. It's working for me,but am I missing something? Are there any security risks with this approach?
The reason I don’t personally run #proxmox in my #homelab is the host machine needing a static local IP address that must also be hardcoded in the hosts file (see https://www.servethehome.com/how-to-change-primary-proxmox-ve-ip-address/). I understand why it is necessary for the networking virtualization but I personally don't like it for a dynamic environment like the homelab.
Docker with #Portainer seems to be a more flexible solution with obviously a different feature set.
Personally, I am trying to get rid of all 'subscription-based' software solutions, even on mobile devices, unless they offer extremely advantageous costs.
Profit should come from the quality of work done in security, innovation, technology, and efficiency, not from depriving the right to use unless a subscription fee is paid. The innovations should encourage the user to be motivated to continue investing in a solution, not the noose around the neck of the cessation of the right to use the software itself
Well, I was very suspicious about the listing of these USB drives under #proxmox, since they all show the same serial number with 3x500GB and 2x160GB drives.
But it turns out that's what I plunked into the cheap 5-bay USB enclosure - 3x500's and 2x160's.
The serial number repeat seems to be a limitation of this controller. Maybe #linux driver is lacking in ability to pass SMART info through.
One of my #Proxmox containers is acting up. I do sometimes get these weird issues with them. Usually it has been due to the CT disk filling up, but this one seems fine resource wise.
Anybody running a desktop environment on the same machine as #Proxmox? Because of space/location constrains, I'm wanting to have the same computer run Proxmox and KDE. I know it's not recommended, but if I can make it work relatively securely and dependably, it would make my setup much easier.
ooh i figured out how to get #macOS#Sonoma installed on my new #proxmox server. this is exciting for me because my creative workstation is overworked and one of the things it does is operate a 512GB #iCloud Content Cache.
and if you have a household of more than 3 devices that use iCloud, you should probably consider running one. even if you just did OS updates you'd be happy you did. probably. (as far as i know there aren't any easily exploited privacy risks)
My new mini #homeserver rack is all assembled, and it..is..ALIVE!!! Of course, I'm super stoked...but as you can see, Mr. Biggleswerth is clearly unamused... 🤣🐶
Can't wait to finish getting my #Proxmox server and #RaspberryPi connected next! Hell, I think it's about time to spin up #homeassistant again too! 😎🤘 :raspberrypi: :homeassistant:
