I wanted to ditch / long time ago.
Now seems to be a good time to do so.

Aw, I did my homework on and found some rumors, so, I don’t wanna take my chances.

And since is a proprietary, I don’t wanna bet on it.

I ended up with the idea of hosting my own server.

Has anyone done it before? How was it? Any advice? What to keep in mind? What was the server hardware specs?

thomas,
@thomas@metalhead.club avatar

@fell @davidrevoy @monsieuricon also WHY should this be a problem for @linux / kernel.org to fix, @protonmail?

It's YOUR and YOUR Service not theirs.

Just don't fuck with customers' eMails FFS!

To me this is entirely undesireable behaviour for any eMail-Provider but then again so is the entire proposition of not using real and instead letting some 3rd party appliance/service handle it - regardless if or @Tutanota or or whatever.

@gaycookie But yeah, are assholes more often than not as I've experienved literally in the pas:

They don't do but will yeet any silently if one dares to sent them >100 eMails per day in total per Domain and/or IP Adress - which is easier reached than not if one uses and in general as all recipients are counted seperately...

Naturally their uses can't alow-list one nor do they see anything in that regard.

God I hate so much...

  1. I have to jump hoops to manage my server, because my Plesk license doesn't cover PostgreSQL.
  2. It keeps annoying me about buying shit.
  3. It defaults to and supports only as a caching proxy in front of Apache.
  4. Said NGINX support is broken af, making you click options in a specific order for them to work at all.

I want to get rid of it so bad but I don't want to set up all those servers from scratch 😭

@fribbledom How to leave #GMail in 3 easy steps:

  1. Request a #takeout archive
  2. Convert the MBOX file to a Maildir using mb2md
  3. Upload your emails to your own #Mailserver

I did this the other day, easier than I expected it to be.

Hey developers,

Interested in to a smol but neat project? I'm looking for help with feature requests for my side project: https://github.com/t-lo/mailserver/issues

Mailserver is "a no pain, minimal configuration, full-featured dockerised mail server" based on postfix and dovecot. Goal of this project is to ship a DKMS / DMARC / SPF mailserver system whose emails are accepted by GMail / Outlook etc. out of the box.

(boosts welcome!)

Wow - this is strange.

"lost connection with mx02.mail.icloud.com[17.57.152.5] while sending RCPT TO"

appears when I try to send any mail to icloud.com users. BUT: Sometimes it works. Most of the time it doesn't.

WTF. Why?!

Is Apple randomly killing connections? Any clue why this might happen? (it's not IPv4 vs IPv6 😉 and my mailserver is not on a popular blocklist)

I can even reproduce the issue using manual SMTP commands over telnet)

JSON Meta Application Protocol Specification (JMAP)

Modern IMAP replacement. It's not in Dovecot, yet. But planned to be included, if you can trust a mailing list message from 2016 (I didn't expect JMAP to be so old!)

Wrapped up some automation for setting up and operating a dockerised based on very few settings: https://github.com/t-lo/mailserver, originally inspired by @jwildeboer 's blog series.

It comes with SPF, DMARC, and DKIM integration, helpers for setting up DNS entries, and an optional monitoring suite. Instructions on and an example of how to connect a containerised mailman 3 are included.

It's operational on three hosts now and has gotten some real-life practice -a good time for cutting a 1.0!
