Briefly back onto the Farnsworths. Finished both cases, but one of the displays died, and the replacement sent was wrong. So waiting (again) to get the second one running.

Moved the Strowger script and the test card script onto an Internet facing server. Currently, I can only try the test card and remote loop back.

I designed this piece in Rhinoceros and laser cut it out of 1/8" plywood. It measures about 36" x 24". It's called Reef #1 (I expect there will be more reef designs).

Xylem Arbor is composed of 224 lasercut bent aluminum leaves climbing up a 120’ tall atrium. Each has a different shape and filigree pattern inspired by natural patterns like leaf veins, dragonfly wings, cellular structures and sea fans https://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/blog/?p=9558 #lasercutting #sculpture #art #generativeart #generativedesign

The bottom of the Xylem Arbor installation has 12’ long green leaves overlapping densely

Absolutely love it when everything is going, feels like a proper workshop. Some wall mounts for something in my daughters room (pics to follow), a Barbie themed name plate for her window sill, some Steam Deck Perspex keyrings on the laser cutter and just about to resin print something for a friend.

Genuine question: Could I get a job where I primarily design lasercutting vectors? A good job, decent pay, stable, maybe remote, all that.

I'm wicked good at it with almost a decade experience. I just hadn't considered it as a primary vocation somehow. Probably because I don't have and didn't intentionally pursue a graphic design degree.

More context is I'm a hardware hacker and electronics PM.

How and where do I even look for this kinda gig?

My wife and I don't exchange Christmas gifts, but every year we make an ornament for each other.

This was our fifth wedding anniversary, so I wanted to make something that reflected how humbled I am to be married to such an incredible woman. ;)

Question beyond my making skills:

What's the easiest/smallest tool investment to cut spring steel?
As in the PEI coated stuff used on #3dPrinting beds.

I'm tempted to clamp it between wood and use a jigsaw with a sheet metal blade, but I think that might make a razor sharp edge (or just not work). Maybe an oscillating multi-tool?

Can it be done with some #cnc or #lasercutting tools?

Did some laser cutting this week. I picked up the pattern on Etsy and couldn't help myself. Knocked it out in a couple of days (one day to cut, one day to re-cut some bits, build and paint. #lasercutting #bloodandplunder

Still working on the K40 laser machine at the maker space.

I'm using a separate 24V power supply for the cohesion 3D mini board control board and for the stepper motors. So I feel comfortable using the 24V and 5V from the laser power supply (LPS) to power some led lights and other small things. Problem is that the 5V and 24V connections on the LPS are made with a pin plug instead of screw terminals. So no easy way to add more connections

Had a bunch of 2 pin detachable screw terminals on hand so I made up a power distribution block with some solder board.

3D printed a case for it and laser etched the pinout info on top of the case. Engraving was infilled with black paint.

Picture of one end of the Solder board, with attached screw terminals, screwed onto a black 3D printed base that has stand offs build in. The end terminal is unplugged from the soldered on base.
Picture of the under side of a red 3D printed case top. Has cut outs for the screw terminals. At each corner are brass heat set screw inserts for attaching the top to the base.
Picture of the assembled case. The red 3D printed case top has been laser etched showing the 5V IN and 24V IN pinouts as well as the 5V OUT and 24V OUT pintouts. The etching has been filled in with black paint to high light the engraving.

Hey #mastodon, a fun question. So where do makers and 3d printing folks hang out around here? I feel like there isn't much going on in the big instance for this type of crowd, so I'm looking to move closer to my people.

If you know any geeky #community with lots of makers, please ping me

Thank muchly #maker #3dprinting

@kaievans There are several. I'm an admin of Maker Forums where we have both discourse at https://forum.makerforums.info paired with Mastodon at https://social.makerforums.info so of course I'm most familiar with that.

I'm also planning to turn on the Discourse ActivityPub federation when it is ready (it has some restrictions right now that will be removed over time).

Following the #3dprinting and #3dprinted tags will help find other instances, too. I've seen fewer tagged #maker or #making so far but you might find more other specific tags like #laser or #laserCutting etc.

I made this pen holding shelf today. It got a bit annoying to search through a pile of pens next to my desk...

I feel prepared for my next session with the #penplotter. I designed some things that should also work well as a #postcard

Let me know if you want to receive a free surprise postcard!

https://www.meetup.com/ctrl-h/events/293727500/

I went once when I first moved to #PDX but I lived in SE so it was a kinda long bike ride. I moved to NE and I was hoping to go more often since it's less than a mile away now, but then Covid happened.

So STOKED that it's coming back! Me and my partner have some #3Dprinting/#laserCutting projects we want to do!

I haven't been to a #dorkbot since I lived in #SF, so I can't wait to see what people bring!
