I REALLY REALLY REALLY RATHER MISS, the "good" old days of IceCast WinAmp #streaming and #IRC chat sigh …those were the days! …this #Twitch SHIT is utter rubbish! …i can't even …'splain how utterly flawed the whole scheme is!

…so, then, why am i still attracted to it?

Just another friendly reminder to get off #Discord and use #IRC, #XMPP, or #Matrix instead. https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/11/24034705/discord-layoffs-17-percent-employees

There's still plenty of alternatives out there, even #forum platforms are still here.

I wonder if someone ever analyzed the "mobile cost" (bandwidth, battery usage, ...) of messengers like #WhatsApp/ #Signal/ #Telegram, chat systems like #IRC, and maybe even more "exotic" chat systems like #mail, @delta -chat, #fedi?

Is #irc as a service competitive against #zulip or #discord ? Looking for a solution with private rooms / subject tags / topics / threads. iOS #push notifications. Searchable history. Possibly history export and import. That’s it. Very low traffic expected. Plain text. Please advise.

Discord is trying to sneak in unannounced privacy changes again.

A new beta feature called "Clips" allows voice chat to be recorded. You have to dig up the new setting and manually opt-out.

kkarhan,

@Dandelion This shit should be illegal!

#YetAnotherReason to never use #Discord and/or any other #centralized #SingleVendor / #SingleProvider "Solution"!

#MicrosoftTeams and anything else are just like Dicsord, but worse!

Consider #IRC, #XMPP, #Zulip, #JitsiMeet or #WebCall depending on your workflows instead...

You're welcome!

Been slowly adding things to the bahai.fyi #Gemini capsule. Mainly archives of content from #USENET, Reddit, and old blogs so far. Lots of reading material, for the fun of it. One thing that's been fun is being reminded how commonly one came across #Gopher, #IRC, anonymous FTP, and even finger back in the mid- to late 90s. The web was just a small part of the online experience at that time.

I would've rather expected #XMPP & #IRC instead, but still cool...

bacardi55, to Matrix EN

I'm thinking about stopping my #matrix server, as I find it too heavy to maintain and I'm not using any of the benefits of matrix federated architecture. I don't participate in any public rooms (even the one I joined) except a private one I have with friends. Also as a bridge to IRC which is cool but just a nice to have…

I want to move to something lighter and simpler, just so I can host a private discussion room with friends (but has to be end to end encrypted, which remove #IRC unfortunately).

#xmpp seems as complex as matrix (is it lighter though?) and too far from my limited needs anyway… I used to host a #mattermost instance, but it is too close to slack UI to my licking and didn't enjoy it too much…

Not sure there is a good alternative for me (insisting on for me, because I know matrix is great for many others).

mzumquadrat, to Discord German

If I were in a room with #discord, #irc and #xmpp and had a pistol with two bullets, I would shoot discord twice.

rn I'm doing a lot of research on early internet fandom for my bachelor thesis and since I was born after the turn of the millennium it's making me wonder how it must have been to be a fan on the internet when Usenet and ICQ/IRC/AIM and GeoCities were still a thing. It really feels like having some kind of lost nostalgia, I've only lived to see early facebook, msn and flipnote as my early internet interactions.
If you were a fan on the internet in the late 90's / early 00's, or know someone that was, please hit me up!! I'd love to have a chat about it!!
(please boost for coverage)

Let it be clear (at least for myself to myself) : I am on #mastodon to escape #facebook and #twitter socially, economically and politically toxic ecosystems. I don't know what my instance will do but I will block #threads
I really hope the #tootcommunity at least discusses about this.

I know some rejoice of Meta "joining the choir" of Federation. I want Meta to wither and die and be replaced by the Fedi. Because that company is evil.

That was my #selfrighteous post of the day thank you ! 😘

1/3 My history in "Social Media" is #usenet and #IRC. I always avoided big corporations when possible, especially USA based ones. So, for me no #facebook, #instagram, #whatsapp, #twitter, #x, #microsoft subscriptionware etc..
Because it is increasingly hard to have relations with banks and government without one, I only make an exception for a smartphone. Sadly, it is almost imossible to have one without "selling ones soul" to either #google or #apple .

kkarhan,

@jascha yeah, had like half a dozen people ask me if I have any tickets but not only do I not have any but the decision of #37C3 organizers to neither mandate masks nor install air filters sealed the "won't attend" for me months ago.

Cuz if I have to gear up fully because noone will do even the minimal effort then I might just stay at home, watch the #livestream and join an #IRC instead...

My issues with , and why I still currently prefer :

  • It's XML everywhere
  • The session-management system is inferior to what matrix has with session ids and security keys
  • The closest you can get to a web client is ConverseJS, which is really underwhelming, especially since it uses bootstrap (the css framework) and doesn't even support dark theme :(
  • XMPP has already fallen of a cliff in terms of popularity, and it's only getting worse, meanwhile matrix is thriving.
vitali64sur,
@vitali64sur@mamot.fr avatar

@hexaheximal I have many issues with #Matrix, which is why I prefer sticking to #IRC and #xmpp.

  • No sane complete lightweight client
  • Either Element or WIP clients
  • XMPP and IRC have a lot of different clients. I personally use poezio and senpai respectively.
  • It's confusing how E2EE is handled
  • The flagship matrix server software, synapse, requires too much resources. Meanwhile I self-host prosody, an XMPP server software which is very lightweight on resources (0-1% CPU, 2.4% RAM).
