Just found that #nextcloud allows to bridge various chat services as well. So right now my private #discord gets connected with my local #irc server.

One sobering thought is that I looked at the list of chat services and noticed that I don't actually use more than that.

I'm already using tmux+weechat, I'm in the future! 😂

after a few weeks of not doing anything but playing Shadow of War when I had the time, today I went and installed an eggdrop bot on my little rpi #irc server. Then spent the rest of the afternoon trying to figure out why it wouldn't want to join any channels.

    @ChrisWere A year ago I did a survey about #Messenger apps with more options.
    Result: 1. Signal (21%), 2. Threema (15%), 3. WhatsApp (12%), 4. Matrix + Telegram (9%), 6. XMPP (7%), 7. Discord (8%), ...
    I had forgotten #IRC there, but it wasn't mentioned in the open answers either.

    @kubikpixel I use #IRC every day, but I cannot let go of #weechat: having it running on a shell-server is just too convenient.

    HexChat 2.16.2 — The Final Release

    This will be the last release I make of HexChat. The project has largely been unmaintained for years now and nobody else stepped up to do that work.

    @hund man, this hurts. #Hexchat was the first #IRC client I tried under Linux, way back when, as a newb, I'd hop on the ubuntu channel and ask my questions. I kept using it for a long time until I learned to set up irssi, and still would use it in some livecds.

    So I'm not particularly "affected" by this, but it does have a special place in my heart.

    I'll repeat my old take on , and chat protocols.

    These protocols are open, thus there is no reason to not make them interoperable.

    In the end users dont care about protocol, they care about client. And users can choose any client they wish.

    If all three can be seamlessly talk to each other, we'll have beautiful solution.

    Even better if it can be done without bridges (or the bridges are built in to clients/protocols)

    Instead of fighting over "the one true protocol" we should make them as seamlessly interoperable as possible!

    We have zero excuse. These three (and probably more!) are all open.

    I would love to help as well.

    @aks the closest one can reliably get to that idea right now is an network with first party gateways allowing access from and . I run such a network and while I wish the current gateways had better support, it is working quite well overall.

    Is there not a media attachment/transfer extension for #irc (v3)? I suppose there is DCC but it seems bad for actual file transfers compared to just about any other p2p protocol, or http. Basic things like resuming transfers or chunking and compression.

    Joined the Signal username land grab, got the usual handle. Question arises: Best practices on posting/sharing. At the moment you have to know my phone # to Signal me, but that’s very easy to figure out. So, initially inclined to just post the username. Hmmmmmm…

    #signalapp #signal

    eighthave,

    @timbray Using a well known username for is a recipe for receiving lots of spam. I'll bet that's the main reason why Signal does not currently have much spam. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to use my public handle. Signal does well with smaller numbers of people and less active chats. Very active chats or large groups are quite painful in my experience as compared to @element Signal's use case is communicating with people you know, while are for big/active groups

    Ayé ! C’est la fin pour #HexChat#RIP #IRC 😢7

    https://hexchat.github.io/news/2.16.2.html

    Cela dit, placer le code source sur GitHub pour qu’il “demeure là-bas jusqu’à la fin de Microsoft”, alors que GitHub n’est lui-même qu’une “poubelle à retardement” qui peut virer (et l’a déjà fait) n’importe quel projet à sa seule discrétion, c’est pas la meilleure idée du monde, je dirais. :/

    (Et avant de dire “oui, mais on peut le reprendre” : c’est JUSTEMENT parce que PERSONNE n’a voulu le maintenir, malgré un appel pour ça, que ce logiciel est abandonné !)

    Wait...

    In order to have Discord take your report AT ALL, you:

    • have to have joined the problem Discord server;
    • have to select the message IN THE APP to report it;
    • have to trust Discord "Trust and Safety" to take the report seriously.

    Am I missing something? It sounds like a lot of abuse that could otherwise be reported will intentionally fall through the cracks this way.

    immibis,

    @yakkoj Only in apps - on the desktop or web version, you have to enable developer mode to get some internal IDs, then go to a separate form on their website, and enter your contact details!

    Meanwhile, bad actors have ways to get YOU banned easily by exploiting AI moderation.

    Just #BoycottDiscord, return to #IRC.
