Please toot! Really struggling with my anxiety right now, raising money is just not going to plan and my housing fears for winter have been exacerbated. I cannot stress how desperately I need people to share and donate to my campaign because it’s literally my only chance to be housed this winter
There is seldom a problem from whom someone cannot profit:
one aspect of the #housingcrisis has been people stuck in small(ish) flats (or houses) that they are unable to move from as their family grows...
#Selfstorage offers a relief (or release valve) for space constraints, and so it is perhaps unsurprising that this year the sector has passed the £1bn revenue mark for the first time.
This is partly due to rising prices of course, but nonetheless its another indicator of housing problems!
Can we start by outlawing short term rentals (like #Airbnb and #vrbo)? That would immediately free up a free thousand units in most Canadian major metros.
@opendna@HistoPol@britt@drahardja I'm curious about enforcement. InsideAirbnb.com (which may not be accurate) states around 28% of rentals in Vancouver are unlicensed. Until short-term rental sites validate licenses, I expect compliance to be low.
Other cities don't even bother with enforcement. The Montreal Airbnb where nine people burned to death in April was not licensed.
Housing precarity refers to the condition of being vulnerable to housing insecurity or instability, which is why we spoke to All The Houses I've Ever Lived In author Kieran Yates on why shelter is important.
Average #rent in #London: £2500
Average rent across the UK: £1190
When you know the average (mean) take home salary in the UK is around £2600, you can see that even outside London for the average worker rent accounts for around 45% of take home pay...
This is the brutal reality of a country on the side of landlords not tenants - almost th dictionary definition of #rentiercapitalism!
