Grandalf, to Vanlife

Not on my bingo card:

Driving through the arid regions of South Australia and stopped overnight.

Thunderstorm with a LOT of rain.

The creek that wasn't there about 1Km ahead of us, suddenly was. It went for from dry dust to impassable in about an hour—a salutary warning to those who camp in creekbeds—and is still rising 2 hours later. Flowing too fast across the road to drive through and the water is over the bridge railings so too deep anyway.

Lots of trucks and cars turning around.

Guess we'll be here for a little while 🤷‍♂️ Time to put the kettle on ☕

🇺🇸 US: Michigan healthcare workers describe dismal conditions in hospitals amid COVID-19 surge.

One worker stated, “COVID is rampant. Keep your masks on. It’s ramping up. Biden thinks it’s nonexistent, management thinks it’s nonexistent, too. I don’t think we are testing everyone. We are testing if they are a suspected case, but we don’t always know.”

Grandalf, to religion

A reminder that religious organisations—all religious organisations—exist only to further their own aims. Those aims only include the supporting of others where it is beneficial to the religion.

David Price, Jacinta Nampijinpa Price’s father, was consulted by a Presbyterian church committee on whether the Welcome to Country ceremony should be continued by church entities. He has no idea why. He is neither Indigenous or Presbyterian.

The committee did NOT consult the very people they were tasked with consulting: two Indigenous ministers and their own missionary organisation.

They also quoted Wakka Wakka woman Brooke Prentice out of context and without consulting her in a manner designed to further divide Christians from the Indigenous.

Why? Because they had an outcome in mind before they started.

I wonder if they realise that all of those countries they spent years pissing on while convincing UK voters that the EU was the work of the Devil can veto their rejoining?

And rest assured, the UK needs to rejoin; it just hasn't got the world clout it used to have.

Imagine being so teeny tiny that you are an endoparasite on leafhoppers

Leafhoppers are already in the "so small they go unnoticed" category, and you're just a little pest on a minuscule thing.

Of course the group that's most likely to choose this life? The wasps.

Wasps are some of the smallest insects. There are "fairy flies" that are parasites of the eggs of certain insects.

They are so small that air is "thick" to them and their wings have feathered edges are are oar shaped.

    Grandalf,

    @futurebird

From what I can read in the original paper, those tiny males (no eyes, no wings, etc) exist only to fertilize a female either in the egg they have paresitised or immediately after hatching.

A male that's only there to ensure a modicum of genetic variety.

    That's … unsettling 😳

The whole decision is well thought out and a good read. It will hopefully help other petioners in other states get their ducks in a row.

“Into the trash went more than 18 million masks, 22 million gowns, 500,000 gloves, and more. That’s not counting states that didn’t give the AP exact figures.”

Ugh. Such horrible mismanagement that they didn’t give more masks away for free to the public.

    https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-ppe-stockpiles-masks-50bf7739fc9d69f4b991a14daadecaba

    Grandalf,

    @luckytran

Masks and gowns don't "expire"; that's an artificial concept developed by healthcare systems to make the public feel like an "old" gown or mask is suddenly unsafe and has been disposed of. Gloves can get too old and brittle, but that usually takes a decade (or bad storage).

This is unconsionable waste when so many organisations and individuals could make effective use of the gear.

Paul Biggar - @paulbiggar - has laid it on the line in no uncertain terms.

The Zionist Israeli war against the Palestinian people is wrong. Utterly, completely wrong.

Paul has written of his frustrations and made his stand in an excellent piece here:

    https://blog.paulbiggar.com/i-cant-sleep/

    Thoughful, researched, and heartfelt.

"People I thought were friends, were allies. So much humanity for those killed on October 7th, none for the people killed on the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, or in November or December."

    Give it a read.
