Panoramic view during totality at Long Point. The temperature dropped suddenly and all the birds stopped singing. All around, we heard people cheering. #Eclipse2024#Eclipse#panorama
Best bit of the #eclipse / #eclipse2024 hashtags right now is that the people with Big Cameras and Big Lenses are getting home and are posting the first of their photos...
It clouded up by the time I got home from work, but it made it easier to get a photo. You really need to zoom in, though. 😄#PartialEclipse#Eclipse2024#GreenvilleSC
The bad news is I lost my ski pass. The good news is that meant I was back at our rental house looking for it just as the eclipse peaked. Not totality, but I like it. Lots of sunspots. #Eclipse#eclipse2024
The #eclipse was super fun; we’re glad we came. I got to sit in the right seat while my wife did all the flying and I managed comms. She’s become a HUGE fan of the #autopilot. #flyga#eclipse2024
My favorite picture I took today of the eclipse. It was such an incredible experience and worth all the traffic to get to that small park beside a lake near a mountain.
I cut up a pair of eclipse glasses, and used one of the "lenses" over an old digital camera (that had a damaged light sensor from the 2017 eclipse). The first photo is untouched, the second one modified to compensate for the camera not knowing what to do with the moon shadow. #Eclipse#Eclipse2024#MoonShadow
So. That was impressive. Here’s a quick sample from the backyard. Of note: temperature drop from 79.3 to 74.8, #solar production from the panels dropped to 0 and the house draw from the grid was the usual constant 420 watts, once the sun started coming back out the panels ramped back up, the temperature continued to drop for a few minutes to 74.5 but finally started edging up, and the dog could give a shit and just wandered around sniffing like usual.
Wow. The pictures don’t do it justice. Jupiter was visible to the left and Venus to the right (not in picture).
Ran an insect blacklight during the totality, with a control run the evening before. Got a ton of insects during both, but very different species. Fascinating. More later.
I'll post more after I get them sorted, culled, and edited, but here is the first shot I got as totality started. Solar prominences are nicely visible, but underexposed to catch much corona. #eclipse2024
The Astronomer Royal finished the rite that re-lit the sun after its consumption by the moon. As daylight returned, there was polite applause, and the crowd began to disperse from the common, many depositing a coin of thanks. One oddly dressed stranger waved at the Astronomer Royal as they passed. “See you at the next one, Claude. God Bless America!”
“What’s an America?” asked the Astronomer’s youngest acolyte, themself attending their very first eclipse.
“It’s an old, old name for the Imperium, youngster” the Astronomer replied, scowling at the departing gaggle. “Remind me to show you the chronovaults when we get back to the Citadel”
“Yes, Ser”
“Fucking stasis tourists” Claude muttered to himself.
