I'm going to have a bit of a #tech#rant (less charitable people might say #whine) here. If you just want jokes and cute bunny pictures, feel free to skip this one.
Object of my #ire this week? #Furnaces. I'm not even going to rant about their main control boards; most of that's been said better than I could say it, by others with more knowledge than I.
I'm #impressed by what it accomplishes; it is quite the #feat, and not totally #obvious at first glance.
But it means that little control module is really quite #complicated, and is a dense little #blob of high-power circuitry. It would be expensive enough just for that.
The actual 3-phase motor is #simple - that's one of the reasons they're used in industry, simple means less to go #wrong. And it appears to be well-made, so there are #quality#bearings and #windings and everything in it. But the motor itself isn't expensive. Rheem probably doesn't pay more than USD 100 for that part of it, and maybe less.

"#Statism" is basically a measurement of how much #control you think a #government should have over its #people. If you love #rules and #regulations and forcing others to do certain things or not do certain things, you fall to the high end of this scale (rightward).
If you're a John #Varley-style #Heinleiner, and think everyone should be independent and only engage in entirely voluntary transactions, you fall to the low, leftward end of that scale.

For several reasons (don’t @ me) I still have accounts on those other sites (winding down) and it’s continuously baffling to me that people I consider politically and academically smart continue to complain about #enshittification (of the #birxsite, of Google, of Chrome) but can’t be arsed to use the alternatives that are already in place. What is this phenomenon? Even those fleeing the #birdsite go to #bluesky - and talk about how it will very probably go down the same route. People #complain about the fact they have to get used to new #tech that people might have never done anything with. It takes time to move to a new #platform, especially if it's #federated some people prefer the #control a site has with the #centralized system as it has a basis of who controls it. #Mastodon doesn't and that causes people to loose direction of focus on the bigger picture and become afraid about it. Or using a new tool that only #geeks use. That is why #meta made #threads

In my opinion this make #customers believe that requesting a #feature like that leads to #security#threats and it's probably best to have Microsoft fully #control their products and just eat out of the palm of their hand while this situation rather shows that they are not in full control of their systems for other reasons. The responsibility of this incident is not fully undertaking by them. It's kinda your own fault.
