As a fun little experiment, @damon and I worked together to get a #Mastodon instance up and running that stores media on #IPFS! It was an interesting learning experience.
I don’t think we’re ready to announce anything yet, as this was in service of another project in development. But, there’s an increasing number of ways to host content on an IPFS node service, and tie it back to platforms like Mastodon using an S3-compatible API for Object Storage and some proxying.
This is all pretty rudimentary, but the big-brain realization is that a more robust version could be done by pairing Minio to s3x if we wanted to self-host an IPFS node with those specific features.

I expect more of this, not just re #IPFS but as #p2p systems are happening, storage models will change for the better. #Autonomi is the project I'm most familiar with and they have already talked about this and have partners ready to upload their data. They are not yet revealed, but I wouldn't be surprised if replacing AWS was in there.

While I am harping on the subject of internet social media based on self-publishing rather than large republishing companies like Fbook, Twitter, etc...
I am quite concerned about the raw records that form the history of our times simply vanishing, irretrievably, as people age and die.
In earlier days things were recorded with relative permanence on paper (or stone). Not so today - one's entire life's work can vanish in few microseconds.
Not just the media or the storage of today are impermanent, but we have created a clock-driven scythe in the form of ICANN's utterly stupid domain name renewal system. There are as many potential domain names as electrons in the universe, but ICANN rules require leasing them in 1 to 10 year increments, thus undermining much of the means of referencing our already weakly permanent digital creations.
(I won't harp on how impermanent and fragile are our database driven, dynamically constructed, web pages.)
@karlauerbach sounds like a good time to bring up #IPFS where content is located by its hash rather than some location or DNS record.
Really, it sounds like you’re trying to use DNS for something it was never intended for, and complaining that it doesn’t do well something that it was never supposed to do in the first place.
Did you know that you don't need to commit to an entire @agregore browser to make use of it's tech? If you already have #nodejs installed you can run agregore-compatible #JavaScript modules from your cli over any protocol supported by the browser. (e.g. #IPFS or #gemini )

With this you can share #p2p code between applications and command line utilities.
I'm not rich, but I don't spend more than I earn in interest on my Bitcoin, so I'm having a hard time motivating myself to look for a job. I've been a web developer for about 25 years, and though I like the work, I can't stand the people. They are ego-maniacal, bad at communication, and humorless in general. There are exceptions, but they get cowed by louder more aggressive ones. "So contract" I hear you say; but here's the weird thing; I actually like working with people.
#WebGPU, #WebBluetooth, and #WebSockets open up so many possibilities too. I see so many hardware makers shipping web-based configuration tools these days and I'm HERE FOR IT! There's almost nothing the web can't do these days.

Ok so I think the IPFS is probably the most coolest and futuristic decentralized server project I have ever seen by far, huge game changer. The fact that you can host an entire HTML site free of charge is insanity to me. Think about the possibilities hosting your own indie musics, comics, arts, stories and games. I’ve been aware of this collaboration for years, but it is so cool that they are announcing successful experiments. The Interplanetary File System is no longer just a clever name. It can be used to send data to nodes on satellites in space. Next, the moon!

Looks like the dweb.link #gateway has come to life. I'm doing everything I can to make this player catch on, but I need the help of the #IPFS community to do so. This player's pin takes up about 300 MB, but if you already have an old YATSU player pinned (before the rebrand to Michal Diviš), this player's pin will realistically only take up about 3 MB extra on your drive.
