Dxpedition to Herring Island with @DropTableFoxes and @alexhelvetica is about to begin. You do not want to miss having this island in your logs.
Likely 40m SSB. ETA about an hour. Spots will be posted here
Physical radio, using real antennas, picking up real radio waves rather than streaming, with all its quirks, limitations, and occasional anomalies 😲.
Currently my main focus is Sporadic-E propagation, which allows FM radio stations, normally restricted to line-of-sight reach, to travel thousands of km's away ✈️
However, #radio is not just FM or digital. There are also several bands down below, offering a range of types of communications - and they're blessed w/ properties FM radio can usually only beg for - continental or even global reach! 🌐
In particular, #shortwave listening can get you hours of entertainment, world news, exotic programming, and mysteries. Oh, and reliable comms between licenced #amateurradio operators 😅
Have your fingers crossed on September 25th as that's when I'm about to take my #amateurradio exam! 👩🏫
I know it's a looooong way from now but I couldn't resist - and I missed the previous date, which was... 2 days after I finally signed-up for that exam 🤦♂️ and when I was doing it it was a Saturday 🤦♂️🤦♂️
I'm often asked why I do early morning #pota#parksontheair activations. It's difficult to compete with what Mother Nature has to offer at sunrise. #amateurradio#hamradio
@KI5SMN is this offer still on the table? Life is still crazy for me, but would love to spread the word.
"I just got into a vigorous and refreshing exchange concerning what I will refer to as 'tactical communications readiness'.
The concerns were, to be resilient and flexible with respect to internet and voice communications.
I brought up ham radio.
In the context of that discussion I volunteered to help anyone up their rf electronics game to par for testing for their Ham license.
I also tagged the offer as open to anyone within reach of the message, and it occurred to me that I could still do better:
So with this message to all, I will broaden the reach of that offer.
If you are reading this, and would like to get your amateur radio operator's license, and also would appreciate some amount of guidance and rail greasing, as it were, in this interest - I'm at your service."
I'm currently giving mastodon.radio a try, thanks to the admins for having me!
I'm a #maker, with #electronics and (some) #metalworking skills. I'm also a #hamradio#AmateurRadio operator with a UK full licence, under callsign M0OFX (and one of the three joint and equal holders of the M0YIP club).
I'm also into #ReverseEngineering and currently working on the Jerrold/GI Analog Cable TV system (see #analogcable) and hoping to build my own #CATV head-end.
Amateur radio is the hobby of "Not sure if that antenna will work? Just try it. You might be surprised!"
I've seen people load up all kinds of crazy things for antennas, including the chain link backstop on a baseball field, aluminum patio chairs, and those wire cages you put around tomato plants. I saw a guy load up an incandescent light bulb on WSPR and was heard halfway across the country.
In about 30 minutes from now at 2am UTC, the Worldwide PRIDE Net / Pride Radio Group Net will convene on the Pride Radio Network. Info on how to connect can be found at https://prideradionetwork.weebly.com
No Field Day for me this year but you can catch me doing a Pre-Field Day #FT8#pota#parksontheair early activation from K-7956 Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve #AmateurRadio#HamRadio

Looking at this as a potential pairing for the RasPi4x8GB or similar SBC for dedicated 24x7 js8call station....
