Phillip Bump notes that despite his claims that Americans widely support the Supreme Court’s ]ruling shifting abortion regulation to the states, polling data (see PRRI’s latest survey) show a majority of Americans support abortion legality across most states, even in states that had the highest levels of support for Trump in 2020.
Paul Waldman notes that the latest exhaustive survey by PRRI of American attitudes about abortion shows that "just 9% of Americans who believe that abortion should be illegal in all cases":
"That 9 percent, the sliver of Americans who want abortion to always be illegal, is not only a minority nationally, it’s a minority in every state, and not just a minority but a tiny minority."
"While it may come as a surprise to many, most religious groups today favor the legality of abortion. In fact, there are only four (out of 16) religious groups in which a majority say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases: white evangelical Protestants, Hispanic Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Latter-Day Saints. Even combined, these four outlier groups only constitute one in five Americans."
