It’s not lost on me that many electeds in San Francisco are simply latching on to the first available Chinese American person, usually conservative, and then saying all Chinese Americans want tough on crime pro-police politicians like them (and ignoring other types of people who do not want those things)

Culturally relevant convenience food that hits your flavor profile is important (I don’t love the Chinese or Thai stuff at TJ’s, it just tastes weird to me)

I've been making this "dish" for years.

It's easy to make. You can now buy the fried dough ("yow til") at 99Ranch, as well as the preserved duck eggs ("pei don"). Otherwise, you just need the long grained rice (boiled to a thick & smooth consistency which requires some practice to get right and some sliced green onions & sesame seed oil to top it off.

It's at the top of my list of Cantonese comfort food. Yum!!! 🤗

A new book, “Corky Lee’s Asian America,” edited by the artist Chee Wang Ng and the historian Mae Ngai, collects hundreds of pictures that Lee shot from the early nineteen-seventies to the end of his life. It also includes essays from scholars, family members, writers, artists, friends, and activists. “In endless frames of film,” Renee Tajima-Peña, a filmmaker and a professor at U.C.L.A., writes, “he gave us the gift of our collective memory."

I want to start something in San Francisco where, if you’re a queer #AAPI person in need from anywhere including abroad, we’ll activate your peers and elders to help you. I’m at a thing where I’m meeting a gazillion queer and trans #AAPI elders who were here when we had no visibility at all. One of them, a 70 yo Filipina queer woman said, ‘one of the newscasters commented on live TV that even the Asians are marching’ (at the March on Washington)

All very inspiring, but even more inspiring is seeing so many ways to just.. be. I never saw what it might be to be an older queer person. Here I see them all the time. I wrote about this:

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I want to recommend Japanese-American Kishi Bashi’s song film “Omoiyari.”

It’s described as “a musical journey to understand WWII era Japanese Incarceration, assimilation, and what it means to be a minority in America today.”

The film is streaming on Paramount+ and the record is available on most platforms. Both are amazing.
