I was pretty shocked today what a terrible experience it is to run #Fedora#Linux in #VirtualBox on Windows. Is there a better free option? Perhaps VMware Player?
I could not for the life of me get macOS to run in Virtual Box.
So I cheated and download a premade VM of an older build of OS X Mountain Lion (10.8).
Perhaps it was good that I couldn't get a current release to work. Even though 10.8 is 15 years old and was last updated 8 years ago, my mouse lagged as I moved it across the screen
I presume it was a display (graphic) issue, given that I could still download and install software superfast
Not going to lie, I wouldn't be unhappy to see an #opensource arms race of sorts in the commercial #Linux space. So far, #SUSE is the only one that has obviously done anything actionable, to my knowledge, around the rhetoric. If #Oracle wants to step up and fix CDDL/GPL compatibility or opensource the PUEL parts of #VirtualBox, now would be a great time to step up to the plate and take a swing.
:boost_requested: :boost_animated: :boost_ok: #FollowerPower: Anyone with #Linux - #boot|ing #KnowHow able and willing to take a look why my current build of OS/1337 doesn't boot?
It's a 1440kB 3,5" #Floppy image and should work just fine in #VirtualBox / #QEMU / #KVM / #vmware but it's stuck after loading #Linux (bzImage) and the remaining files (rootfs.cpio.xz)...
Need some help! Okay, I’m running an Ubuntu 22.04 LTS VM via VirtualBox. After I login though, if I don’t do anything for a while, it takes me back to the login prompt. Is there a way to remove/extend the timeout?
Hate on #Oracle#VirtualBox all you want, but when it comes to installing old school versions of Windows server, it really can't be beat. In VMWare, if I want to install Windows Server 2003, I'd either need sighted assistance or a lot of help from OCR, because not only is the Windows audio service disabled, but VMWare doesn't include the drivers needed for audio to work anyway, even if you enabled the service. You'd need to install not only VMWare Tools, but you'd have to find the audio driver that VMWare uses as well. With VirtualBox, however, Shift + F10, sc config AudioSrv start= auto, net start AudioSrv, and boom! Audio works! Now you can enable Narrator and breeze through the installation. The Lord said: 'Let there be sound,' and there was sound! #accessibility#WindowsServer#RetroTech
CI jobs for my ansible playbook have been broken for months due to some changes with GitHub Actions.
This took me down a rabbit hole to fix...
Long story short: Self-Hosted GitHub Actions runner, running on Proxmox with nested virtualization to run molecule tests using Vagrant against VirtualBox VMs. 🙃
Good news: Network Support is in it.
Status: Still within #1440kB size for the #Core Edition.
Bad News: PCI(e) stack had to be yeeted in order to fit, so no #Networking in #VirtualBox
I'll now have to get my workflow to follow the pipeline that @SweetAIBelle has been builing...
@ptribble - strange issue, trying to install #Tribblix in a #VirtualBox VM, the installation process fails because no hard disk is detected: only the CD drive is seen by the system.
Installing Tribblix 031 on Ubuntu 20.04.6, VirtualBox version 6.1.38
I have tried fiddling with the IDE order (moving the DVD to secondary IDE), but no results so far.
Today's $dayjob shenanigans. Building #OpenWrt from scratch as a #VirtualBox VM for sandbox testing DHCP PXE boot settings, then re-compiling to run on a BT Hub 5a for deployment in a lab.
Not very retro at all, but we all have to have a break sometime. 😊
One of the first #racing game I played as a kid was #STUNTS from Brøderbund. Back in 1992/1993, this #MSDOS game was HUGE on the schoolyard! Especially, because you could make your own tracks and trade them with your friends. It was basically Trackmania in EGA graphics. 😜
