This is annecdata - not a serious academic study. Adjust your expectations accordingly. When I first got online, the World Wide Web was still in its infancy - so CompuServe was my gateway to the Internet. I loved their well organised chat room. A couple of clicks and I could be discussing Babylon 5 with […]
#oggi#29maggio 25 anni fa l'on. IT/TXT/PDF/?uri=OJ:C:1998:386:FULL&from=EN pag. 164
..but I pushed pause because, while my inbox is rocking, I don't have my #ActivityPub outbox set up to process from a queue yet (it's still sending love). 😞 So back to unsexy "proper #code logic" for a bit..
..still confident I'll be following a few folks by Sunday tho - ugly test attached! 😆
I come from the old #Usenet days, so this fediverse stuff is a breath of.. well.. not fresh but refreshing air!
I could talk more than you'd care to hear about my old days writing a #BBS, and how the Usenet was a game changer.. and then.. it kinda all lost the thread..
But it's getting traction again.. and I am 100% here for it and to help support it!
Was anyone here a devotee to rec.music.industrial in the 90s?
Remember the tapes and CDs the group produced? I was on a few.
I even recall getting a $1 royalty check because one of them was packaged into an... Alternative Press (?) magazine monthly issue on newstands. I never got a copy of that mag and wish I had.
This #Mastodon / #email bridge <https://tacobelllabs.net/@nkizz/110340426573847934> by @nkizz is just brilliant, but you know what would absolutely ROCK? A #Fediverse server that had native support for #IMAP.
While we're on the topic, I wonder if anybody has thought about building a client with an UX inspired by Usenet newsreaders (personally, MicroPlanet Gravity was one of the few things I missed from Windows when I switched to Linux, would love to see something like that for Mastodon.)
The more I read the #ActivityPub spec the more I see it as an extension of #email and #Usenet protocols. By this I mean I have the feeling that it would be possible to roundtrip e.g. email through AP “losslessly”. Which opens interesting possibilities when considering the development of platform-agnostic AP servers like #Vocata https://codeberg.org/Vocata/vocata
Now I'm dreaming of a client that handles emails, news and AP …
#Mastodon introducing #QT#QTs on future release tells me this ship may not be heading into the iceberg that #Usenet and #IRC hit in their arrogance of not listening to their users. #Twitter#Bluesky
Common sense/medium rare take: treating people like traitors for signing up for Blue Sky will drive folks away from the forms of online community you're advancing. I won't be signing up to #BlueSky because its obviously going to be a milquetoast website — at best Twitter 2, the persistence of an idea beyond its very real & clear death — a literal zombie community that preys on the minds of the living for our lack of ability to imagine, organize and build a true alternative that can appeal to the masses while upholding the principals of #SoftwareFreedom. But lashing out at people for their lack of loyalty to a platform only signals that yours in decay.
#Mastodon is not the end all/be all, as I'm sure most of my mutuals agree. That its had a hard time appealing to folks beyond hacker scenes is both a sign of its weakness and its strength. Its strength is that we have probably the most exciting space of discourse among hackers since #usenet, along with a reasonably generic protocol to build on, #activitypub. But I'm sure we all want it to grow, including a wide range of voices from all walks of life & cultures. So we all have to be thinking about how to work together and try new things in order to grow, and I'm not convinced affirming loyalty to a platform is conducive to that sort of growth.
I am, like many others here, a refugee from other social media sites. In my case, it all started way back in 1990 when I did the #OU DT200 information technology course. This gave me access to their CoSy based conferencing system. From there I explored various #BBSs before joining #CIX. From there I migrated to #Facebook and #Twitter via #Usenet.
This weekend I was part of a great discussion about platform migration in #fandom. What's happening now with #TwitterMigration (and all types of online communities!) has both some similarities and differences. But if you're interested in one example of these kinds of migrations (e.g. #usenet to #livejournal to #tumblr and #ao3 in #fanfiction communities) here's my video essay about this research! https://youtu.be/xzQO-vkX3q0
It seems like the people responding to this poll (so far) skew towards those who experienced the Internet in the 1990s and earlier.
Which might suggest there are a lot of people on the #Fediverse that not only remember the #oldInternet , but might want to support, bring back, and re-create & restore the best parts of the "old Internet".
