Is it me or are people less arsey on Mast?

Like, the whole Twitter hierarchy thing, I don't get so much on here?

If I follow a famous and they never interact ever with anyone else, I unfollow them.

I'm here for dialogue, not monologue.

(Of course, some people seek the validation of parasocial adulation. Fair does but nope.)

(Also, dialogue doesn't mean insulting me / being a knobhead. I block at the slightest breeze of twattery.)

@Jyoti I think the lack of quote-tweets helps - there's no dunking. And without algorithms pushing tweets at people, being edgy's not going to get hate-attention, it'll just result in people getting muted/unfollowed, so there's no reward for being a bellend.

I like it!

@crinolinerobot

Agreed!

Also, my Home feed is a joy on here, a mix of stupid silliness and hugely useful info.

Mast for me is an actual resource.

@Jyoti I really appreciate being able to follow hashtags. Takes me back to my usenet days in a way, being able to use social media for subjects, not individuals.

I've deliberately avoided work-connected stuff on Masto as I get more than enough of that on the Birdsite. Masto is inspiration and recreation.

@crinolinerobot

#Usenet was my happy place in the early '90s. And Mast def has that vibe, particularly because of the high ratio of geeks, goths and gays on here.

Geeks, Goths And Gays sounds like a killer pitch for Netflix... 🤔

chloetse,

@Jyoti

Absolutely agreed. I reckon a lot of people find Masto boring because most of Twitter's fun comes from dunking and the subsequent drama that goes viral. I can live without that kind of "fun" if it means having less toxic content.

Jyoti,
@Jyoti@mas.to avatar

@chloetse @crinolinerobot

Drama is all very well until it involves you. That's why I don't participate generally. It's all very secondary school-ish.

The only thing I miss from Twitter is that I could publically shame fraudulent companies on there. That was the only positive use of dogpiling I've ever seen.

mzdt,

@Jyoti @chloetse @crinolinerobot the only useful reason I found for contacting companies on tw*tter when things go wrong is to offer feedback, for them to improve their product/service. But they treat everything as something that needs to be defended from, fobbed off, ignored. When I just want the next person to have a better experience.

JuliaRez,

@Jyoti

I very much dig the whole vibe here. In that I'm never going to be the sort of person who speaks clever in the timeline of A Famous in order to get Noticed. That sort of thing is not punk rock.

Also b/c good moderation and, well, trans women being everywhere on Fedi, the fkn bigots get short shrift. The transness hereabouts is a joyful thing.

It seems that there's a deal of work to be done to make the place safer for other marginalised people, but it feels.. possible?

Jyoti,
@Jyoti@mas.to avatar

@JuliaRez

I very much agree that the trans people on here make it a safer vibe overall. And the furries and the goths and, of course, the people who intersect with all three.

If you're a spanner on here, you're not gonna find it a generally welcoming network. And I love that.

notthatdelta,

@Jyoti I've definitely noticed the same thing! I have TWO accounts blocked on Mastodon (and one is a crypto bot). On twitter, I had a blocklist with several hundred (maybe a thousand?) entries. I did have about 70 more followers on twitter, but that's not enough to make that much of a difference.

Jyoti,
@Jyoti@mas.to avatar

@notthatdelta

That's why I love it here soooo much more. Like, ineffably more. :ablobmeltsoblove:

@notthatdelta @Jyoti Not to toot my own horn, but if that's true for you, you need to thank your mods / admins.

There are plenty of toxic people on the Fediverse who love to dogpile anyone they don't like, replying with violent and racist language, just like the worst of Twitter. The difference is that if your server is well-moderated, you just don't see them. The servers they're on are blocked, and if they try to join a well-moderated server, they're quickly removed.

Don't take it for granted

@skyfaller @notthatdelta

Oh, believe me, I don't! I think @trumpet does a great job. Which is why I pay a monthly sub, albeit small - I don't believe in people working for free.

... Which is a good excuse to post this:

Anyone on mas.to who likes it here, show your appreciation at that link!

:ablobmeltsoblove:

notthatdelta,

@Jyoti @skyfaller I send a small donation to my server admin as well (stux, not going to tag to keep the noise down). It's totally worth $10/mo to actually have moderation!

@Jyoti Thanks Jyoti! ☺️❤️

@trumpet

No worries! :ablobattention:

mzdt,

@Jyoti I'm OK with 'annoucement' accounts - if a label or band just post about gigs or new stuff, fine, although obviously a bonus if they do engage. I guess the same for news, journalism etc - I'd rather have that rather than them not being here at all, it's all in 'opt in', after all.

But obviously, the wonderful thing about sites likes this is the discourse, engagement, open access ;-)

Jyoti,
@Jyoti@mas.to avatar

@mzdt

Oh, obviously journalists posting articles, bands announcing releases is another case.

I'm more on about the Ron Burgundy types. 😛
