Beyond all else, "Marquee Moon" is a 10-minute song, and when I was in early CS, with a 2am turn-in time for projects, I would repeat "Marquee Moon" and commit every time the song ends.
During the freeze this week, a pipe burst in the ethanol storage facility used by the UT fish, reptile, and insect collections. The specimens are fine, as it's just metal shelving and sealed jars, but the building itself is damaged in a way that might shut down regular research activities for a few weeks to months.
I recall that around 2009, when I first taught computer science (at Austin Community College, where I had been a student about 15 years earlier), the University of Texas at Austin was imposing wage cuts on its faculty around the same time it raised the annual pay of its head football coach from $2-million to $5-million.
I'm glad I attended a university that prioritizes academics over sports (not #UTAustin ).
"In this game between two public colleges one head coach made $8 million last year, the other made $11 million, and the stealth bomber flying over their game cost $737 million to build and $7 million to operate every year.
Shabazz Stuart @ShabazzStuart - 1d College sports in a country that can’t afford to make college free."
The home of #UTAustin’s new oligarch-funded “Civitas Institute”, designed to subvert our public higher education and replace it with ruling class propaganda, climate denial, and a training pipeline for right-wing politicians, is quite fittingly in the old Littlefield House.
Littlefield was an early UT benefactor and a Confederate officer. A straight line of violent, repressive white supremacy from the Civil War through to the Texas oil elites.
My unit at #UTAustin continues to expand. We just acquired a new field station in Hill Country, west of Austin. This is in an area where most of the habitat (semi-arid oak woodland on rolling hills) is in private owned ranches that are being sold off to urban sprawl, and this will preserve a few hundred acres.
An ant-decapitating fly (Apocephalus sp.) takes advantage of a Pheidole dentata nest disturbed by the photographer to lay her eggs in the exposed ants. At #UTAustin's Brackenridge Field Lab in Texas.
There's hardly anyone on here from my university, so searching for #UTAustin just returns a ton of insects as if what UT does is just 100% bugs all the time.
An excellent Twitter thread (via Nitter, so you don’t have to log in) about the potential budgetary catastrophe the Texas legislature has inflicted on public universities by banning DEI offices.
