#TRIVIA: When I was in HS, my math professor liked to tell this story about young German mathematician Carl Gauss…

One day, the kids in his 1-room schoolhouse were misbehaving, so as punishment, the teacher instructed them to "add up all the numbers from 1 to 100."

Young Gauss noticed that "100+1 was the same as 99+2, 98+3, etc." 50 pairs of "101". Multiplied by 50, giving you the answer: "5050".

After only a minute, young Gauss tossed his slate on the teacher's desk. Here!

A bit of #TRIVIA: Dickens was well-aware his incredibly popular books were being read by the Elite & The Royal Family (about the only people who could afford books were the wealthy.)

He wrote "A Christmas Carol" with Queen Victoria in mind, hoping to "educate her" concerning the plight of the poor living in the dark recesses of London/Camdontowne. 🤔

If you're trying to avoid awkward moments around the Thanksgiving table, Merriam-Webster has some controversy-free conversation starters, like the origins of terms such as gravy train and easy as pie. Just for fun, see if you and your loved ones can figure out the meaning of the word "deipnosophist"

The Wampanoag tribe, whose ancestors trace back at least 10,000 years, lived in the area, and the indigenous name for the place was "Patuxet".

The Wampanoags watched as the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, and the village where they settled was known as Patuxet by the Native Americans.

Tonight's the night, everyone. Doors will open at 6, dinner starts at 6:30. I'll start reading the rules for trivia at 7:30.

Dinner is $10/adult, $5/kid (under 12). It's a full Thanksgiving feast.

If you buy dinner, we'll give you 1 answer for trivia (but you still have to figure out with which question it matches up).

Trivia is free.

cazabon, to movies

Cazabon's :

The overall quality and of a film can be approximated with the following :

Q = 1 / ((n - 2) ^ 2)

... where Q is watchability in the interval [0, 1], and n is the number of genres the movie is categorized as having in its IMDB listing.

Action, Comedy: 1.0
Drama, Thriller, Music: 1.0
Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror, Thriller: 0.111

Note: there's a discontinuity at n == 2, which we avoid by using the value 1 in that case.

1/2

cazabon,

@OscarCunningham

Further... a longer version of the number I posted continues to 2^5, but 2^6 is off by one because of the carry from the next 2^7 segment:

> 0.0204081632653...

The Fibonacci one is also a pattern of 2 digits (it also breaks after 34...). Are you aware of any real numbers containing representations of other well-known series, with more than 2 digits per value in the series?

TIL the original Zamboni machine was built on a Jeep, and was popularized by a touring ice skater who happened to witness it: Sonja Henie.

Here is the man himself. Frank Zamboni.

His machine scrapes the ice, augers it into the tank, washes it, storing the dirty rinse-water, and then melts it and spreads it evenly behind with a "towel", where it quickly re-freezes evenly.

Update: Billboard's team said that Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," which topped the Top 100 in 1990, is the greatest pop song since the charts began in 1958. Writer Kyle Denis tells the story of how the song was written, and its ongoing success (its writers decline to say how much money the song made, but say it's sustained two households for two decades).
