Okay, so, like, this is the first album I've ever listened to. I honestly didn't know until he died that was also actually in bands. I must've heard them before at some point, I just didn't know the connection. Wtf, RIP, tattoo the names of the dead on your hands, etc. etc.

We’re still on a break from posting spotlights on albums from our 1001 Other Albums list, but I’m stressed and sad, and therefore I need a little list-making therapy. And so, in honor of the late great Steve Albini who suddenly left us this week, here is a (possibly incomplete) list of the albums from The List that he had a part in, in one way or another:

And, so we have a nice round number of 10 albums, here are a couple not on The List but probably friggin should be:

I think those make a nice little tribute playlist to keep us going for a bit. And, if you want to look up more, here is a (likely very incomplete) list of other bands/artists on The List that Albini worked with, on albums of theirs not on The List: Ben Frost, Cheap Trick, Don Caballero, Esben and the Witch, Fugazi, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Gogol Bordello, Jim O’Rourke, Jimmy Page, Joanna Newsom, Low, Manic Street Preachers, Mogwai, Nine Inch Nails, Pussy Galore, Richard Youngs, Robert Plant, Songs: Ohia, The Ex, The Stooges, and Yonatan Gat.

Feel free to share your favorite Albini-ed album below (and, if it’s not already in The List, let me know if you want me to add it).

Thanks for the music, Steve.

I enjoyed "Building a town that doesn't exist" by @dansinker at a lot! Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLxJ6PtuF9M&t=13858s

It's nice to build something for the web that isn't necessarily useful, but rather entertainment.

I did the same a couple days ago to honor the late by turning his letter to into a mini website. Web can be fun, you know

Nirvana have paid tribute to Steve Albini by sharing the four-page letter he sent the band before agreeing to record their beloved final studio album, In Utero. Albini passed away at the age of 61.

#Requiescat One last nugget, I promise. In 2009, #SteveAlbini wrote this for Record Store Day and the #ChicagoReader published it as an ad for #RecklessRecords.

❝Let’s say you want to buy one Neil Young record, and not as a joke, so you can skip the rockabilly one. He has maybe 20 credible albums to choose from. You need a record store guy who is super into Neil Young to help you through that maze.❞

Steve Albini. Fond memories of the many times was in town. When there was time in the tour schedule, they would invite everyone back for pancakes on Sunday, and a morning show. It’s nice to see the letters, kranky takes, and tales of Bob Weston saving the day by salvaging a power supply to continue recording as scheduled. Guy was punk, and like many aging punks, needs more rest than they know. Fuck heart attacks.

“At times, this could make it difficult to write about Shellac, as Pothast discovered when she almost persuaded bassist Bob Weston to play her some of To All Trains down the Zoom call, ahead of its imminent release. In the end, Weston couldn't be persuaded. "It just sounds like another Shellac record, he offered. "It's the same three guys in the same studio."”

The importance of #SteveAlbini for me is the idea of integrity in the music industry. He could be cruel and apologized later, but his core value was don't be dishonest to get paid. Be truthful to your muse, not trends. Don't support a system where people promote what they think is inferior art for profit.

Beyond music, our culture becomes what we all share the most. To lie is a choice to lessen the collective potential, esp as decentralization gives us all more say. #ccmusic #AttentionDemocracy

The legendary musician, producer, audio engineer and writer Steve Albini died yesterday. Here's a tribute to him from Rolling Stone in which Rob Sheffield recalls his famous poker sessions at All Tomorrow's Parties festivals (Albini was a two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner).

"If you casually popped into the room, to eavesdrop or merely loiter, maybe pretend you were making up your mind, he had a business-like way of transfixing you with his eyes and asking 'Are you in?' in a tone that made it clear 'nope, just watching you make other people look like fools' was not going to cut it. That was always his approach to music as well. He always knew how to clear a room. Requiescat, Steve Albini. You and your noise will be missed." [Story may be paywalled]

Naturally, when Steve Albini popped into the room while we were mixing the LP for I restrained myself from snapping any photos. Keeping it classy. Just like Steve, who (by all accounts) did not much for care for jazz yet built a magnificent recording studio that has fostered countless superb jazz albums. He had integrity and grit and there'll never be another like him.
