Artist Dani Gal has a collection of 700 spoken-word vinyl records that tell a partial history of the 20th century, from Gandhi and Goebbels to Golda Meir and Gamal Nasser. Ahead of a new exhibition at Vancouver's Polygon Gallery, he spoke to Montecristo's Peter Watts about what he's learned from these records, and the stories that aren't told.
Can't help quoting the "hmmm!" from this piece today. This is a track off Gil Scott Heron's first album, Small Talk at 125th and Lenox (though, it was actually recorded in an Atlantic Records studio with a small live audience)....
Mastodon has a lot of everything. And that includes Music and Spoken Word! Radio Free Fedi showcases it all. Music with Spoken Word pieces at the top of the hour. Which means you might hear me read about the weirdness of growing up in a very rural Dixie County, FL there. https://radiofreefedi.net/#music#radio#SpokenWord#fediverse#florida
I ditched school, along with one of my friends, to attend this spoken word event at Cal Poly Pomona. Turned out Jello was doing most of what would become the album “High Priest of Harmful Matter”.
I called the student union and got the ok to record the talk.
But during the Q&A session, some mf asked Jello what he thought of home recording. Jello says he’s generally ok with it, but then starts talking about how it also rips off bands like DK and so he’s not entirely for it.
And then he looks at me and says “like this guy”, and asks me to give him the tape. We have a short back and forth where I’m trying to defend myself, tell him the recording is for personal use, I got advanced permission. But he asks again, with the audience looking at me intently, so I take out the cassette and hand it to him.
But here’s the twist! I had already recorded a full 90 minutes, and that cassette was in my pocket.
