‘Corporate Rock Sucks’ author Jim Ruland on how Greg Ginn's label - host to Black Flag, Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr and so many more - changed the direction of punk rock, post-punk, and indie.
Soundgarden's 'Superunknown' still sounds just as amazing as it did when I bought the CD from Circuit City in 1994 when I was 14. Easily one of the greatest albums of all time. That day, I bought my first 3 CDs ever -- the others being Jar of Flies and Versus. What a YEAR for music 1994 was.
I had this badass Soundgarden "Kickstand" shirt around 1995 probably that was done by an artist called Pushead. I wore it til it fell apart. Wish I still had it 😂 They sell for a lot now (see attached sold eBay listing, not mine).
That back graphic! 🔥 What a SONG, too. That first line, "Kickstand, you broke loose and I threw up" it's just like 🤯
Soundgarden were on another LEVEL with this album.
Today's theme for the #ThursdayFiveList (via @neurothing) is #TheNumbers, which is super tough because bands really love numbers in titles! Sticking to songs with "one":
💿 31/10/1988, #soundgarden sortait son premier album, "Ultramega OK". C’est le passage chez SST records après 2 ep chez SubPop.
Le titre ultramega ok, est sortie en single en mai 89.
I thought about the Clash briefly yesterday, strangely via one of my previously less favorite of their songs that's grown on me recently popping in my head-- "Lovers Rock" (it's ALWAYS in my head lately?) & I knew I'd have to listen to London Calling today. I've listened to it so many times, it's like, a PART of me. I know every weird little sound on it. And I still listen to it multiple times every year. Just like Superunknown.
Ah, the perfect album. Not all bands can do it. I think very few can.
Got to jam with a group today with the #Gretsch and it's got some neat tricks to it. It has some particular sweet spots with rhythm distortion. I can see now why this was popular with some grunge era guitarists. A little bolder and easier to tame than a Strat and not as overruling as a Les Paul.
One thing I really like about the #Gretsch is that I can crank up the tubes and it doesn't get muddy in a bad way. I'm not sure how to describe a "clean muddy" tone, but when Chris Cornell plays here you can get a sense of it:
