FTC to ban from selling browsing data for advertising purposes
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/ftc-to-ban-avast-from-selling-browsing-data-for-advertising-purposes/

Edit: just to be clear: most anti-malware products deployed major security issues like open backdoors on many Millions of computers in the past. It's a business where users pay for a false feeling of security and tend to take higher risks. Almost all companies that got had anti-malware in place.

This isn’t just about letting people believe what they want if it’s not harming anyone. It is one thing for someone who sincerely believes that water has a memory to go and take homeopathic cold pills, it’s another when someone is not well-informed on the subject and thinks they’re getting regular, effective pills from a regular doctor. It would be even worse if the “doctor” prescribing crystals and #snakeoil and black salve is the only doctor in their area.

When I log in to X, Facebook, instagram etc, the majority of my “micro targeted” ad content is for beer belly concealing garments, and male hair loss solutions.

An odd thing about me is, for a late middle aged white guy, my genetics really rolled high for those buckets. My waistline is still stubbornly where it ended up in my mid twenties, and I have an uncannily full head of hair, barely yet greying.

I suspect the ad-tech works about as well as the self-driving car tech.

@cms Even when I was less careful about being tracked, I found the targets ads terrible. For about a year /after/ I got married Facebook would constantly be advertising Russian brides to me.

cms,
@cms@social.lol avatar

@hl I used to be really careful about avoiding tracking, it’s true, although I basically gave up doing anything clever beyond using an ad blocker about ten years ago, figuring it was a lost cause.

I have lots of specific nerd interests I spend a bunch of time and money online about, that are highly commercialised. It shouldn’t take much inference.

Remember #Musk announcing that Tesla’s goal was to demonstrate a cross-country autonomous drive, Los Angeles to Times Square in New York, “without the need for a single touch, including the charger,” by the end of 2017?

Well, that didn't go well. Now #Tesla is recalling those cars because, well, they seem to kill people who believed him.

NOTE: Musk also said that some of those going to "occupy Mars" are going to die.

😀 True, but some seem very reluctant to accept that fate.

Now, about that, why is that #Musk, being so proud about his company #SpaceX (and for a good reason) has never flown in one of their rockets? Bezos has, as has Branson. It couldn't be because he's chickening out, could it? 🤣

“For Services provided on Mars, or in transit to Mars via Starship or other spacecraft, the parties recognize Mars as a free planet and that no Earth-based government has authority or sovereignty over Martian activities,” says SpaceX’s satellite Internet Starlink company, in its terms of service."

The statement is a lie; it's governed by an appropriate nation, in accordance with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, but wants no laws.

@65dBnoise Imagine how wonderful to live in a restricted space, like some city under a glass dome, where if something stops to work you risk everyone dies. Where space and privacy will be a mega premium and you'll have to share limited resources with everyone. More than "a paradise" I'd expect it to be "some sort of hell military organized location" where you'll need "total discipline and order" for things to work hopefully smooth. I don't think it's going to be a nice living !

It's just super hyped BS.
#KimStanleyRobinson's #SciFi novels in #TheMarsTrilogy describe in painful (😀) detail such a scenario, and give a happy ending, too (Kim is of course American). Only, it won't happen that way, if it ever happens at all.

As an engineer I LMAO with the ease (well, lots of words, but still...) with which problems are solved in #KSR novels, but that is the beauty of a good fantasy. Only, real life falls miserably short of such luck.

So much about #Musk's intentions, which some of his naive (?) scientist cosignatories appeared to believe were related to the fate of humanity.
