If society collapses, what skills will make you useful to society so that when cannibalism inevitably becomes a thing you're not turned into stew?

: A graphical desktop needs to be an app, with updates managed separately from the underlying OS (kernel+userland). It would be a meta-app, inside which other apps run. We have created such apps, they're called web browsers. But they require a desktop to run on, and their security is appalling, regularly giving malicious code access to the underlying OS.

Could we replace both desktop and browser with a graphical meta-app that runs real programs in isolation from the base OS?

I really don’t understand user-hostile infrastructure like this in SF’s public parks. The main argument I’ve heard is that it’s to stop certain classes of visitor from ruining other visitors’ experience, but stereotyping one specific user group (skaters, in this example) is just old-fashioned bigotry.

Not to mention that this kind of (dubious) strategy isn’t even applied evenly. The worst experiences I’ve had in our public parks have almost entirely involved dogs, but I don’t see anti-dog infrastructure anywhere (heck, I don’t even see respect for, or enforcement of, existing dog regulations most of the time). #SanFranciscoHellscape #HostileInfrastructureEdition #ShowerThoughts

That the German SPD and FDP position themselves often against green policies might actually be quite smart. This way, they force the greens for (fiscal) concessions for those areas where all parties differ while still getting green policies “for free.”

So even when we assume green policies objectively serve the grater good, it makes still sense to be against them as center-party to gain political capital.

Also, green voters lose politically on other fronts.

Why would #Robocop keep being a cop after all the shit being a cop did to him? Is he in a prison of having to back to OCP for updates, maintenance or organic replenishment? Since he’s dependent on that, I guess he feels that there’s no other choice but to stay on the force and try to clean up Detroit and/or do what he can to make the police not just another gang? #ShowerThoughts

Looks like Mr. Robot's E Corp is what Elon's X Corp will be in the future.
In the series, E Corp is labeled as "Evil Corp". What X Corp will be?

  • Xenanigans Corp?
  • X-ray Corp (they will know and see everything through you, specially with the Neuralink chip)

In the Hackers movie "It's in that place where I put that thing that time." is what Phreak says to Kate. The place is a condom dispenser. I've always wondered, is this just a standard drop off location and distress phrase? Or does it imply Phreak and Kate got it on at some point and it's a real clue based on something she would know/remember?

Could it be useful to have identity forwarding servers in the fediverse? Eg let's say digital rights orgs around the world have their own official accounts in the verse, under the own domain. But there's also a server that gives each one an address @org (just a random example). When people use that address, it redirects them as much as possible to their own local address. Obviously people from each org control which address that forwarder points to.

: An email app would be much more useful as a project management tool if I could give the emails a priority as they come in, on a reasonably granular scale, with the default being low. Then display them according to priority, with chronology as a second order sort. Bonus points for an ability to toggle back and forth between that mode, and more chronological modes.

#ShowerThoughts: I'd like to be part of a digital age version of the old record club.

I'm imagining getting an email every time a kiwi music act releases a new record. The email tells me where I can listen to the record. It also tells me the best way to give money to the act if I like it, so that most of the money goes to them rather than intermediaries.

The cool thing is that an email newsletter like this is totally platform independent, and requires minimal coordination.
