Anyway, as I mentioned recently, I have a new workstation that finally allows me to test our code using all three backends (#CUDA, #ROCm/#HIP and #CPU w/ #OpeMP) thanks to having an #AMD#Ryzen processor with an integrated #GPU in addition to a discrete #NVIDIA GPU.
Of course the iGPU is massively underpowered compared to the high-end dGPU workhorse, but I would expect it to outperform the CPU on most workloads.
And this is where things get interesting.
I think I switch over to my #ThinkPad or the #OptiPlex for daily usage.
I mostly only do some reading/coding. Running the #Ryzen system is quite hefty for this purpose.
In the end I can just boot the system when I need.
Project for tomorrow 😎
In general I think it is more practical to use what one needs given the situation.
For light work I do not need to have 24 cores... seems overkill. (And the electricity bill goes up)
The first #Industrial#PC in its category with 10GbE capabilities. Bedrock V3000 is set for harsh environments for various applications: Energy, robotics & manufacturing control. Watch our expert explain the advantages of AMD #Ryzen based fanless computer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQgAn2MVoIA&t=1s
Daily driver is now a #OptiPlex 7060 Micro. 😉
In the end all I need is #Firefox and a good editor like #Vim - and of course my trusty #Debian :debian:
This system has also a NVMe inside which can be used for another OS of choice.. more on that later 😎
If I want to do some gaming I can fire up the #Ryzen system - but that is quite rare already.
So, saving energy and getting work done is a good deal 🙂
Pulse 14 Gen3 users note! We have just released a new BIOS/EC update today. This brings quite a few important things to your beloved laptop, we would like to highlight in a 🧵.
Ooohhh baby! It's finally time to upgrade from the mini-pc server (a beast btw) to a second full-sized rack mount build to take this home server to another level! 🙌🤘😎 #HomeLab#ryzen#server
Thinking I want to build my first personal home server. I have a #Synology#NAS DS220j but I'm thinking it's probably not adequate for Plex transcoding, among other tasks. I have a spare #Ryzen 2700x and 16GB DDR4, and also a 2060 Super (does a server benefit from a GPU?). Looking for any advice #fosstodon would be willing to share regarding hardware and software solutions.
Have you ever tried emulating #Windows98 on a #Ryzen system and had it crash spectacularly? Just within the last year or so, someone's written a patch for 95/98/98SE to fix it!
There's a floppy image you can boot your VM from, which will patch and fix your Win9x install even if it's partially installed and you hit the Explorer crash, so it doesn't even matter hugely where/when in the installation process you apply it. https://github.com/JHRobotics/patcher9x/releases/
Ok. Getting #AMD#ryzen#thinkpad was really a good idea. I was finally able to try it out. That business thingy plays Skyrim buttersmooth on Ultra in Wine. None of my X1Cs nor X1 Nano can do that. And I can barely hear the fan! Also FreeBSD works kinda… fine (minus wifi) on it.
A new vulnerability impacting AMD’s line of Zen 2 processors — which includes popular CPUs like the budget-friendly Ryzen 5 3600 — has been discovered that can be exploited to steal sensitive data like passwords and encryption keys. A Mini AMD Powerhouse! Ryzen 7735HS - Radeon 680M - Low Price!
Got a BIG question in this video. What project should I tackle next with one of these little mini PCs?
NAS? File Server? Photo Host?
My shiny shitbox of random #rgb with the new GPU… I need to replace just one more thing. The CPU AIO is a 120mm radiator and that #Ryzen will boil it during summer…🤡😂 #AMD#Radeon#7900XT
I'm upgrading an HP EliteBook 745 G6 laptop for a customer who is purchasing it from me.
I took out the 512GB SSD and replaced it with a 1TB nvme SSD. Took out the two 8GB memory modules and replaced them with two 16GB modules for 32GB. Of that, the AMD GPU reserves 2GB and has shared memory of 15GB. So the GPU has plenty of memory available to it for a little laptop.
The processor is a Ryzen 7 Pro 3700U
I've been selling more of these HP EliteBook laptops with Ryzen processors. I hope to put one to more testing, but selling them almost as fast as I get them in.
I think an ideal model for me to test is the 13 inch version of this model, the EliteBook 735 G6, as I think the 13 inch size is ideal for how I use a laptop (currently using a ThinkPad T470s and the 14 inch screen is just a bit too large for comfort with how I carry a laptop around).
For now I think I change over to my #ThinkPad as a daily driver.
I only rarely use my #Ryzen system to it's full potential.
Pretty much can boot it when I want to game or do something very CPU intesive - if the need arises.
Also, this will save me some energy.
Plus the Notebook is of course more agile and not bound to my desktop. 😎
