I can just imagine some leaders I've met sizing individuals up and asking themselves (cue the cackle): "How much pressure can I apply to this person for better performance."
Update: Mistake. I do my best to be careful when digging through problematic ideas. Normally I prefer it when the one source does all of the heavy lifting and I’m not making any connections. In this case after @flowchainsensei comments I contacted Cindy Nebel, the original author (on the learning science blog) was only taking the concept of stress in learning. Her article is good. Reading her notes, it seemed like I was reading about Eustress ….
….The problem is that while Eustress has a similar claim, the original paper doesn’t rely on Yerkes Dodson Law and it so my associating the two was invalid. When I was investigating, I searched to see if various trustworthy sites that write about psychology had linked Eustress to Yerkes-Dodson. I found several that did and I thought this was my smoking gun. After rereading, I realized that my linkage isn’t supported by the literature.
Lesson learned, prefer a single source that makes all the linkages. Don’t make any linkages on my own. Where practical read the original research to double check.
