Congratulations to the team on their big news of their being acquired by @crossref

This database is an invaluable tool for and it is great to hear it will continue and be open and freely available:

https://retractionwatch.com/2023/09/12/the-retraction-watch-database-becomes-completely-open-and-rw-becomes-far-more-sustainable/#more-127849

Also good to hear this will support the wider activities of the team in the investigative journalism they do

    Absolutely fascinating - lots of this was brand new to me, but I love the way it explores how the structure and function of key technologies impacts society.

    Thank you for this @siderea - really helpful in thinking about #OpenResearch practices and some of the software I'm looking at for researchers

    Retropz,

    @siderea @phire @mhoye

    Wow, that's quite something. I've read your post and now I need to read the 'Pyramid Scheme' article.

    Thank you for flagging this, sounds like it's an important read

    Retropz,

    Hi @siderea

    Thanks again for flagging the "PYRAMID SCHEME. #HAUTALK" article (https://allegralaboratory.net/pyramid-scheme-hautalk/)

    Really interesting insights into #ResearchCulture & how it was shaped by the software & management choices - and that busy academics didn't necessarily see the whole picture

    "New participant structures dramatically change...how knowledge circulates and how it leads to action; yet everyone involved can still think things are going on pretty much as normally as they ever do."

    While I still have an account on #Twitter I'm definitely moving to a #Mastodon-first approach

    From my first attempt at #Mastodonmigration in November, I think I've now found enough people to follow that my feed feels pretty interesting and interactive.

    I'm following some useful #hashtags for work content.

    I feel psychologically less inhibited in using the platform; I'm enjoying banter and jokes as well as more serious interactions.

    Definitely feel like I've found my feet here now.

    Any cell biologists out there in the #ScienceMastodon universe?

    Highly recommend taking a look at this one day meeting in the UK in #Bristol - https://mellorlab.wordpress.com/actin-2023/

    The #Actin meeting aims to "bring together the UK actin community for a day of informal talks and discussion."

    There are short talks - mostly from #Postdocs and #PhD students, there's a poster session at lunch and prizes, too.

    It's a friendly and inclusive conference and great for networking - check it out!

    Check out the first in-person conference from PostdoCaRe Europe - an event organised by and for

    Shaping the cancer research OF tomorrow

    Heidelberg Academy of Science, Germany

    October 25-27, 2023

    https://postdocareeu.com/conference2023

    Agenda looks great & I particularly like the focus on research

    Do check it out and spread the word to any who might be interested

    hello, world

    Retropz,

    @BBCRD Great to see the experimenting with the and

    I still remember the experiments with streaming - of content - back when I was at university, and how far advanced the BBC was in that technology (the original !)

    I'm looking forward to seeing how this pans out and hope to learn from it in ways that are useful to and - good luck!

    Seems awful quite over on the bird site and quite hopping here. I'm hopeful that this wave is the one that pushes the bulk of science social media to the fediverse.

    Retropz,

    @MCDuncanLab I do feel like there's been a significant shift - perhaps a tipping point? - in the last few weeks.

    Joined Mastodon in Nov '22 and it was a pretty quiet place compared to past experiences. But I'm seeing more familiar faces, more content that's relevant to me, and more big organisations - publishers, institutes, funders - on Mastodon in the last few weeks.

    @FlockOfCats well played

    Journal formatting requirements are a huge drain on authors. Journals can fix this problem.

    New study: "By calculating average researcher salaries in the European Union and the USA, and the time spent on reformatting articles, we estimated that ~ 230 million USD were lost in 2021 alone due to reformatting articles. Should the current practice remain unchanged within this decade, we estimate ~ 2.5 billion USD could be lost between 2022 and 2030."
    https://bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12916-023-02882-y

    Retropz,

    @petersuber This got me thinking even more radical ideas.

    Scientific papers lock up loads of information in a format that is hard for machines to read. Why not think about a digital paper format that is machine-readable, relatively standardised (or at least flexes in standardised ways) and can deal with data in a more modern fashion (e.g. interactive graphs, linked data sets)?

    Any takers?

    Retropz,

    @williamgunn @petersuber
    Super, thanks for the reference. I assumed people were working on it but hadn't got to finding out who!

    I'm thinking more about #OpenSource, #OpenScience projects that could be built by and for scientific communities at the moment, so I'll be very interested to read the reference you shared and think some more!
