Today's tasks:

  • Continue setting up #obsidian for my fiction writing.
  • Read 50 pages for a fellow author, giving feedback.
  • Play #ttrpg with friends tonight (The One Ring)
  • And perhaps get in some reading (currently: Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett)

@stroughtonsmith I focus on making existing apps work with Apple's automation system.

My first app is Actions for Obsidian (macOS & iOS), which makes the note-taking tool #Obsidian a first-class citizen in Apple's #ShortcutsApp. It adds ~40 actions for working with your notes, vaults, Dataviews etc.

I've released it a few weeks ago on desktop 🎉, the iOS version is currently in #TestFlight and will very soon go into the review process.

Thanks! 🙏🏼

I've been seeing people raving about the note-taking app, #Obsidian, almost like a cult, and it got me curious. Then after some light digging and seeing why people liked it, most of it is really just what you'd normally find with #Markdown editors... some of which I think looks better and is more intuitive to use.

#Notable is my go-to for years now, and is available on Linux, macOS and Windows. Another popular one I normally see (but have never tried) is #Joplin which is open source and available on all platforms including mobile.

What I take away from this is... Markdown editors are awesome, and makes it super easy to get your ideas/thoughts out in a really organised way. I've primarily used them for all sorts of notes, work documents, tutorials, manuals, etc. and there's no going back from that.

Taking that #Obsidian plunge. I was resisting for a while but I’m all in now. Anyone have any neat plugin recs?

Kanban boards, task list organising and the canvas are game changers for me and will likely make #Obsidian my go-to app for projects, planning, writing and brain storming. All in one place should work well with my distracted brain @phdstudents @academicchatter

🤔 what are people using for #pkm synchronization? Paying for #obsidian sync or rolling something custom? I am using Telekasten in nvim but want to be able to read and take notes on my phone too

All my community plugins were uninstalled from my #Obsidian vault. Wonder how that happened?

Keeping a House Diary is a bloody brilliant idea!

Mine would probably be in #Obsidian of course.

Thinking of reanimating my personal "blog", but as a #digitalgarden. I've got the domain and am using #wordpress for my business website. But is there anything that's more lightweight that anyone can recommend? I've looked at #obsidianpublish but don't really want to spend that much for hosting. TIA! #obsidian

@mforester Never heard of Hugo, but I'll check it out! I love Markdown, but have very little experience with Github. Wondering if there's a way to go from to publishing w/o obsidianpublish. Thanks for the reco!

Trying out #Obsidian for #notes. Any pointers?

Okay. Here's a proof of concept of my 'fasting tracking'.

After Jeff Huang's post, I've always wanted to do a single-file rolling journal. (https://jeffhuang.com/productivity_text_file/)

• I use the 'buttons' plugin.
• It adds a Templater file with some system prompts.

How it works in a video attached.

Reply if you want me to share the code.

Did you know you can run Apple Shortcuts from a link in Obsidian? Even pass some input with it? 🤯

I just added a link to add my 'fasting time' to my calendar.

My notes are #PlainText first, #Markdown second. They're highly portable between platforms, apps, and devices. #macos and #ios are my weapons of choice, but they'd look and work the same on #android and #Windows.

They aren't #Obsidian notes, or #Logseq / #iaWriter / #tangent / #TextEdit / #Nota / #AnyType / #Taio / #TaskPaper / #vsCode notes, though I can use any of those apps as a lens to view and work with them.

They're wild, and free. This is their theme song:

Earlier this month, I was invited to speak at the Nick Milo's #LinkingYourThinkingConference. In my session (~50 mins) I gave an introduction to the Apple #ShortcutsApp automation system and how #Obsidian can benefit from being a part of it.

I've showcased #ActionsForObsidian, and built a few short workflows to give the audience ideas for how to connect the apps they already use, to their #ObsidianMD vaults.

#Travel planning experience part 2:

#Obsidian is great for my own notes, while as usual what you put in is what you get out of it.

#Notion (as a strong "second brain" contender otherwise) looks good especially on the sharing (important) and practical usability front, though how much I wanna pay for it. Easy with less technical users too.

And then for very focused on trips, #Wanerlog seems very neat so far! https://wanderlog.com

But now I have 3 problems... 🙃

tailsy, to random

I didn't jump onto #Obsidian Canvas right away: every tool I use needs to justify itself in my workflow. But I've been diagramming a lot more on paper, and for "top-down" processes a visual approach works well for me. I'm ready to check it out.

I'm pleased to see that Canvas documents are represented on disk as JSON, and the type definitions are public. It isn't human-readable like Markdown is, but it's easily parsed/converted. This means my canvases aren't "stuck" inside of Obsidian.

Using #Obsidian for trip planning, our upcoming trip is currently at 2k+ words, 14k+ characters, and it's not done yet (plus external documents are in file storage rather than in the knowledge base).

So far it's bot better organised than other ones, but also more constraining, occasionally I do want more doodles, charts, etc... and hand drawing is very fast & convenient - just not robust.

My wife and I decided to go to bed at 20:30. We read a bit before sleeping instead of being cooped up in our separate offices. It has been hectic at work for the past few days.

I am #currentlyReading "Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi on my #Boox Leaf2. I got the KOReader app to sync the highlights to #Readwise and then to #Obsidian. It integrates surprisingly well, almost like a stock experience.

I use Pihole/Netguard to block the telemetry to Alibaba and co.

Good night, Mastodon!

Heya, #WritingCommunity!

Long 'vid brain fog has made #writing a challenge for me.

I'm looking for software/apps/websites to organize the bits and pieces of my WIPs so everything is in one place.

Any recommendations? Tips?
Thanks so much 💙

@Jakra @AvrilMAalund Be sure to look at #Obsidian, too. Biggest difference between Obsidian and #Logseq is that Obsidian is prose- and file-focused and Logseq is outline- and block-focused. They’re both free, so try them both; chances are one will feel more natural to you pretty quickly.

Looking for a #ToDoList app 📝 that:

  • works across PC, iphone, android

and ideally:

  • allows to categorize & physically group tasks (like #GoogleKeep)
  • allows to add sub-tasks to tasks
  • allows to move tasks from one group to another.

Any recommendations? I thought #Obsidian would fit.. but I can’t get it to easily sync between my devices.
