Sunbirds are back to my #balconynest two days in a row! This one seems to be deeply pondering at the old nest, which was made around the same time last year by another pair of Sunbirds. Do you think they will rebuild or salvage the nest for another location?
My question is how do they know the nest is here? Are these the babies that flew off the nest and came back cos they remember where it was?

Google is so fucking useless now Jesus Christ

Who has a battery version? How the hell do you re-engage the magnet that holds it in place? I know I've done it before but nothing works

Anyone got #Nest cameras? Are they really worth the extra price PLUS the seemingly necessary paid subscription?

I don't doubt the video quality is superior to my cheapo Kasa ones, and being able to see them in the google home app sounds really nice but...I'm not sure what could justify me paying the sub on TOP of already expensive cameras.

I mostly just use them to look at my cats

Is there a documented reason that :host pseudo-selector functions can't be the only parent of nested CSS rules?

https://codepen.io/rockerest/pen/vYbdrqq

knowler,

@rockerest Currently, what is represented by the & selector whether it’s implied or explicitly used will be wrapped in :is(). You can read more about that in the current draft of the CSS Nesting Spec here: https://drafts.csswg.org/css-nesting/#nest-selector

The :is() selector doesn’t support pseudo classes. You can read more about that in the CSS Selectors 4 draft here: https://drafts.csswg.org/selectors-4/#matches

There’s some discussion of this in the CSS Working Group repo, for example: https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/9492 (there are other issues too).

This.

Many people do take the effort to set that all up but don’t wanna change default passwords cause it’s ’too much trouble’ :blobcatgiggle:

kkarhan,

@stux and #Ring as well as #nest products openly violate #GDPR and snitch on people against their consent.

My brother texted me “what smart dimmer should I get?”

Little did he know he kicked off a multi-hour chat about Matter, Thread, LAN control, Nest, Google Home, Zigbee, hubs, border routers, controllers, HomeKit, IKEA TRÅDFRI, and XKCD 927.

https://m.xkcd.com/927/

The whole industry has screwed this every chance they’ve had, and Matter—the most promising “solution”—is still a huge disappointment.

Any or experts in the ?

Our boiler flipped the electrics yesterday, and lost all power to the heating and hot water.

Once we managed to get electricity back, we are getting hot pipes internal to the boiler, but everything is cold south of the heat pump. Said heat pump is also leaking black gunk.

We have no hot water or heating - but the thermostats think everything is fine.. just never get to temp.

The pump leaking is the one on the left.

There was this time when some birds started a nest on our window, but it was so precarious that I decided to take the whole thing and put it in a box.
It worked and soon enough there were two eggs and then two more birbs that grew up and flew away.

The video shows a messy nest inside a very destroyed cart box. Inside the nest are two very small birds moving their heads, and very close to each other.

“Consumers have already paid for smart products, in some cases thousands of pounds, so it is excessive that they have to continue to ‘pay’ with their personal information.” — Rocio Concha, director of policy and advocacy at Which?

Very happy this is finally getting mainstream media attention.

Correction!

I posted this photo a couple of weeks ago. I said that this was a cardinal nest outside our front door. I was mistaken, I got a good look at both the male and female birds tending this nest. They are brown thrashers (Toxostoma rufum). Cool!

Saw some fledging sparrows. Earlier all but one of the birds had left the nest. But I guess they came back for a rest and a snack. The nest is looking crowded!

I run #HOOBS on a #RaspberryPi so that I can integrate Google #Nest into #HomeKIt. Why HOOBS? I found the plugin method for Google authentication easier than #HomeAssistant

Earlier today, I had to regenerate the authentication credentials because they’d expired. It was a faff, and I even revisited trying Home Assistant in case the plugins had found a simpler way of resolving the problem Google has created - no, was my finding.

Stumbled upon Starling Home Hub. A seemingly expensive (for what it is) but very simple plug n play method of integrating Nest stuff into HomeKit. Wondering if any of my tootsphere have invested in one? Is it any good? Shipping to the UK adds another 25% to the price, and I can’t afford to spend £105 on a whim!

I know Matter is on it’s way, but it’s not going to be retrofitted to older Nest products, and I don’t intend on replacing almost a dozen cameras or four thermostats just to get HomeKit support!

Boosts appreciated - thanks in advance.

#TodayILearned:

When setting a timer with #Siri or #GoogleAssistant, on your #smartphone, #HomePod, or Google #Nest device, there is no need to use the phrase “set a timer for…” Just invoke your digital assistant and tell it the number of minutes or seconds you want:

“Hey Siri, 2 minutes,” or just hold down the side button on your #iPhone and say “two minutes.”

The same applies to #Google Assistant. “Hey Google, 30 seconds.”

How do I know if a birds nest is abandoned? Or what is it?

I was trying to hack back a duranta hedge to manageable height and discovered this #nest . I pruned around it, not wanting to disturb possible occupants, but also hoping that the missing branches makes it a less appealing site.

That was a few months back. I'd ultimately like to finish the pruning job (but that hedge is non native/semi-invasive, scrawny and already awkward on the ladder)

Probably 4m from the ground so I can't see in. Are nests reused? Can I remove it? Or do i just wait a few years till it rots away? I feel like a 90s cartoon developer-villan!
