What does it mean to federate your Flipboard profile? In the simplest terms, it means that whatever you curate (aka share) on Flipboard will be "syndicated" out to the fediverse with no extra effort. @miaq tests it out and breaks it down.
I'm not OP, but #Flipboard seems like a sort of a link aggregator (called "flips"). You can keep your own links (publicly or privately) and follow other people's curated links, and comment on them.
A little bit like a #Reddit or #Lemmy - except the links are emphasized more than the conversation.
I didn't know how to federate my links, though. So this article is interesting!
It's so crazy to me to think that I was on Xhitter for like 4 years and had a total of about 120 followers, most of which were spammers messaging me about "stream graphics".
I've been on Fedi for less than a year and have 5x that amount of followers and probably only enough spammers to count on one hand. I love this place.
The Sublinks team has written up a little survey, which we feel is both thorough and inclusive. It covers a wide range of topics, such as user privacy, and community engagement, along with trying to gauge things that are difficult when moderating.
Will be my 1-year anniversary on Mastodon and the fediverse in June. Been that long since I left Reddit.
But I still feel very much like a noob. For example, I have a hard time grasping why I can’t sign into my Mastodon profile (https://lemmy.world/u/Hyphlosion@donphan.social ) on lemmy. There’s obviously a profile of my posts, so why can’t I sign into it on lemmy and use it?
Dear @potus, I am excited to see you joining the fediverse, but I question your decision to join Threads.
Please consider committing to #OpenGovernment by creating @potus this will allow you to reach all #Threads users as well as the millions on #Mastodon#Misskey#Friendica#Pixelfed#Lemmy and more with just one account and without favoring a commercial endeavour that still has the power to censor you.
Anyone have a guide to using #bookwyrm they like or have found helpful?
I've had a few friends sign up and mention they were a bit confused about getting started, finding people, finding/adding books, etc. Ideally something geared toward users who are familiar with the fediverse but still a bit new to it. #askFedi
@peoplelikedogs I would reccomend the guided tour on every #bookwyrm instance (found in the footer) as that was perfect for me the first time. Just follow up on what it says to continue the tour, and you should be good. If you have any more questions i would ask the admins/mods of the instance, or do this (asking for help), on online platforms like #mastodon or #lemmy.
Thinking back on my pre-#Fediverse experience, when "social media" took off, my engagement was little different to the shitlords who enjoy their status on those media. Economics says you get what you incentivise for.
But since starting this account, and others on other Fediverse sites (#BookWyrm, #Lemmy, #Pixelfed, etc), I've really got into the groove of being positive, ignoring or downplaying the negative.
It's how I want the Internet to be. Be (as in YOU) the change you want to see.
I was going to mess around with Lemmy but I enabled 2FA yesterday, and somehow failed to update 1Password with the 2FA. So, I guess I've lost that account. 🤷
There were no recovery codes offered when I enabled 2FA. Sigh.
If you're interested in following along in what is happening in the /c/cybersecurity community on infosec.pub (#Lemmy) than you can follow @cybersecurity!
Have you even tried #Piefed? Piefed.social is:
"A lemmy/kbin clone written in Python with Flask.
-Clean, simple code that is easy to understand and contribute to. No fancy design patterns or algorithms.
-Easy setup, easy to manage - few dependencies and extra software required.
-AGPL.
-First class moderation tools."
It's actually really quite nice, and I don't hear much noise about it. Go give this project a look at https://piefed.social.
I've got a few of the Trans Pride's interesting in learning about the Fediverse. Instead of making a video like I said a few days ago I think the easier option at this stage is to make a few written documents.
An Essay explaining what the Fediverse is, How to join it and why you should care.
A Presintation for me to show off in Meetings, Calls and in person to expalin it to someone who doesn't want to read the documents.
Optional: Make a video to explain it, so I can send it to people but this is the last thing I will most likely do for this.
Step 3 of my evil plan regarding #fediverser and the #redditmigration has been executed. Anyone with a reddit account can go to https://portal.alien.top to claim their account at the alien.top #lemmy instance, and when they do so it gives you a list of your current reddit subscriptions and recommends the corresponding lemmy community.
Now, on to build and extend the lemmy communities so that we have more recommendations to make.
Activitypub or Atproto ... one item that both Mastodon have in common with Bluesky is amount of "spam" links and accounts boosting those "spammy" accounts
Several "award winning art / photo" profiles I saw had 5 or more links including their pinned post
Win goes to Bluesky since they seem to have better control of that ... for now
Just updated our https://slrpnk.net#Lemmy instance to the new 0.18.1 version. Massive improvement over earlier versions due to the newly grown community coming together :ablobcatheart:
