WaPo: Never wait in the school car line again. Here’s how.

For the first time in decades, a small but critical mass of children are riding their bikes safely to school again.

"...This is a “bike bus”: a convoy of parents and children who ride to school, picking up kids along the way. While the concept has existed for years, a “bicibus” in Barcelona popularized the idea where it spread like wildfire through videos on social media in 2021. Thousands of parents (and kids) eager to step away from their vehicles have jumped on board. For the first time in decades, a small but critical mass of children are riding their bikes safely to school again...."

How Illinois’ Hands-Off Approach to #Homeschooling Leaves #Children at Risk

At 9 years old, L.J. started missing school. His parents said they would homeschool him.

It took two years — during which he was beaten and denied food — for anyone to notice he wasn’t learning.

Former Alberta UCP MLA Derek Fildebrandt faces criminal charges, accused of threatening a group of teenagers, CBC News has learned.

The very same people who would have you believe that there are "groomer" teachers lurking in every classroom and school library, can't manage to pull off non-violent conflict resolution with actual children.

Biked by Britannia Beach today with 2 fire trucks, 5 cop cars and 3 paramedic vehicles all lights and sirens blaring. Apparently a neighbourhood kid is in critical condition after presumably being found unresponsive in the water. Fuck I hate this. It’s so common and yet so easy to avoid and I’ll stake my claim that the beach is one area where phones should just be banned. It takes no time for shit like this to happen with aspirated water in the lungs

This isn’t a shit on other parents / holier than thou from me. I’ve sat at the beach. I’ve watched others for a long time at the beach. And I’ve used my phone while sitting at the beach, though our kid doesn’t swim there. 30 secs isn’t that long. What’s 45 seconds right? It’s like driving and using a cellphone. I’ve done it and now I don’t. Ever. Driving or at a beach with the kid. Shit happens so fast #ottawa #kids #drowning

PSA: (and a question). #ottawa and #ontario pulled two ticks off the kid after a hike in Gatineau park. And you NEED to check all of the little ones, especially parts of genitalia you can’t just visibly check. Both of these dots are ticks but unsure what kind. Does anyone know if there is a drop off location to get these tested? Lymes disease is shit and the risk increases a LOT after 24-36 hrs attached #kids #ticks

It’s the kids birthday this week, it’s almost June and we’re all sick again. The kid’s had the “cough at night that doesn’t go away” for weeks and my throat and lungs hurt as they haven’t in a long time. Tests are negative for days and fuck I hate kindergarten sometimes. We haven’t changed a lot of our behaviors but the amount of kids hacking away at his school the past few weeks is sad frankly

Kids in wheelchairs can cut wood and build things, but because of the way the school was built, they aren’t able to participate in these classes the way able-bodied students can.

At the start of the school year, my civics teacher assigned us to think of a change we’d like to see in our community.]

Under Japan's national health care system, patients generally share between 30 and 40% of the economic burden for medical expenses. Childbirth, however, isn't covered unless it's a cesarean section. That means parents are left shouldering an average of 500,000 yen (USD $3,200) out of pocket.

LA Times: Column: How ‘Sesame Street’ can prepare kids for climate disasters

...Sesame Workshop — the New York nonprofit that’s been producing the show for 55 years — said it would partner with the global charity Save the Children to “foster young children’s climate resilience.” Basically, the organizations intend to work together to tell stories — starring Elmo, Cookie Monster, Grover and company — that will help kids and their families prepare for the increasingly extreme storms, floods, droughts and other weather extremes already being worsened by coal, oil and gas pollution...."

In a groundbreaking study from 2017, Chatard et al found social comparison to be subliminal.

In the study women were shown images of thin women or heavy women at sub-conscious threshold viewing times of less than 20 milliseconds.

Even when they consciously didn’t register seeing them and weren’t able to make the comparison, the study found feeling good or bad about their bodies still consistently affected.

The important question is what the above means for #mentalhealth of #kids, especially young girls on #socialmedia:

It means we can’t educate ourselves away from this.

We can of course alleviate some of the problems that follow, and we should. Social media provides way too many supermodel-shapes to push those buttons teenagers still don’t know how to react to.

And it is important for educators also to try and not ”talk some sense into the kids”, but promote healthy reactions to the inevitable.

This weekend I went to a band trip with my 12 year old as a chaperone. It started with band performances, ended with them (and me) at an amusement park all day.

I met a bunch of Middle Schoolers who were friends / acquaintances with my daughter. They referred to me as "cool," "legendary," "icon," and one said I was "an icon on par with Madonna." But...but why?

I think about that day and all I can think is that I'm an adult, a parent who was willing to engage with these kids. I talked with them about music, their hobbies, anime, video games, whatever they wanted to talk about. I listened and interacted. Apparently, that's enough to make me an icon.

It feels very basic. But, the fact that just this level of interaction felt out of the norm for them from their friend's parents that it made them call me an icon, I feel that says more about the other adults in their lives than it does about my awesomeness.

...But, I'll take the compliments nonetheless.

Have a great Wednesday.
