update - posted 10/9/2023 by fundraiser organizer Carlos Martinez

"UPDATE: Spoke with Jacob Johns family for the first time since the shooting.

"As today marks , Jacob's family wanted to send a message to please continue to pray for him. As of this morning 10/09/2023, he awaits his health improving, so doctors can proceed with 3rd surgery since the shooting. They are asking everyone to please end the violence and hate towards all , not just today but everyday. It was his honor to stand as a peacekeeper for his brothers and sisters and their children. They send thanks to everyone that got involved and saved his life. His family also wanted to thank everyone that has donated to help him on this long and tough recovery process, and asked for us all to bring logic to chaos.

"We were able to see Jacob via video and he is having fevers due to losing functionality of some organs, difficulty breathing due to wounds inflicted on his chest and lungs, and is facing an unknown amount of surgeries on his very long road to recovery. We ask that everyone please continue to keep him in your prayers, and media to be patient with requests as Jacob's care and safety is the first concern.
Thank you."

As of today, 10/10/2023, the fundraiser is up to $245,888 ($250,000 goal). Thanks to everyone who has donated and shared this. Please keep Johns in your thoughts (and prayers). He has a long way to go...

Today being #indigenouspeoplesday , I’ve been contemplating how the First Americans have been historically—and continue to be—dealt a shitty hand. Here in #whatcomcounty , the #Lummi nation is in an area that’s prone to flooding (and most certainly exacerbated by climate change). Why are indigenous American communities most affected by #climatechange ?

This weekend is Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples weekend. I've been trolling people by calling places by their Native American names (see), such as instead of calling it the Allegheny River, I said ohi:yo'. People got very confused and thought I was talking about the state of Ohio. It was great 😆

Happy !!! Today is a great day to buy from Indigenous artists and businesses -- if you can't buy, BOOST-- it really helps get the word out about our brands and our work. Thanks you so much to everyone boosting and buying from Indigenous sellers today!

I’m not above this shameless plug:

I know many are recommending many Indigenous books for folks to support and learn more about the community.

Consider purchasing those books through an Indigenous bookstore such as my own instead of the huge corporation. (Libraries are a great option too!)

Today is Indigenous People’s Day in the U.S. I highly recommend the series Reservation Dogs.

It’s the first series to feature all indigenous writers and directors, along with an almost entirely indigenous North American cast and production team.

Everything about it is outstanding. The writing, the characters, the acting…everything.

Books by Native & Indigenous Writers
By Elissa Washuta

“This is an in-progress, reverse-chronological list of books by Native and Indigenous writers, a list compiled by me, a Cowlitz tribal member and writer. It is neither exhaustive nor exclusive. I've compiled this list over the years I've been a reader, writer, editor, and teacher, seeking out books by predecessors and peers in Native literatures.”
